Grade 3-5-Beginning with an interest-capturing account of one of Magellan's battles, the author then backtracks to describe the explorer's early life. Most of the book, however, is devoted to his expedition around the world and the troubles he encountered. Illustrations, photographs, and maps come from various sources, many from the Library of Congress, giving an authentic look to the book. Some words, such as "mutiny," "brig," and "strait," are defined smoothly within the text. The "Words to Know" section is less successful, as it includes everyday words such as "rescue" and "reward" that most readers are sure to know. A good supplement to the social studies curriculum.
