From Library Journal
Even more so than fellow Cubists Picasso and Braque, Leger appropriated images of 20th-century industrialism in his work. The 11 essays in this wide-ranging collection explicate the impact of World War I, the "modern" world, and the machine in the evolution of Leger's work in the first quarter of the century. Though at times dense and opaque, the essays here collectively make an important contribution to Leger scholarship. The book includes a useful biographical chronology of Leger's life and an exhibition list (1911-24). Published in conjunction with a European traveling exhibition of Leger's work, this book is recommended for collections of modern art.
