5.0 out of 5 stars Ferrat chante Aragon, March 21, 2001
This review is from: Ferrat Chante Aragon (Audio CD)
With this disc chansonnier Jean Ferrat presented a selection of surrealist poet Louis Aragon's poems set to music. For Jean Ferrat it was one of the artistic highlights of his career as a performer and ever since I first heard this record, it has remained one of my truly favourite albums. First with his warm and deep voice Mr. Ferrat caters to my need for the lower voice registers. I cannot but praise his excellent articulation of the poems. I could follow everything. The poems which are collected here range from social commentary to the love poems Aragon wrote for his wife Elsa Triolet. With vigour Mr. Ferrat delivers social commentaries like 'Un jour, un jour', 'J'Entends, J'Entends' and 'Robert Le Diable'. 'Les Poetes' reflects upon certain poets and poetry itself, and Ferrat gives it a haunting rendition and does likewise for 'Au bout de mon age' (which concerns life and death itself). With poems like 'Le malheur d'aimer', 'C'est si peu dire que je t'aime', 'Que serais-je sans toi', 'Heureux celui qui meurt d'aimer' or 'Aimer a perdre la raison' the poet joyfully and tenderly sings of love. These pieces are magnificent and enduring love poems which express the many facets of love. All of this is perfectly captured by Ferrat through his warm, tender and sensitive rendition of Aragon's poetry.

4.0 out of 5 stars French 'chanson' at its best, February 18, 2006
This review is from: Ferrat Chante Aragon (Audio CD)
These are songs based on poems by the French poet Aragon, mostly about love and romance, but some on the human condition in general. The beautiful lyrics have been turned into mostly beautiful music sang with competence, a beautiful voice, warmth and emotional commitment by Jean Ferrat. Originally published in the 80s it has long deserved a reissue on CD and here it is. Nevertheless, at almost US$ 20 I find it quite expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best examples ever of poetry adapted to song, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Ferrat Chante Aragon (Audio CD)
Aragon's poetry is about passion expressed in love and in committment to social and political issues. Ferrat is a singer of love and revolution. These adaptations of poetry to ballads are perfect.
