I doubt if anyone ever reads this; the album is probably impossible to find now...I got this absolutely outstanding recording when it came out in '93...it wasn't easy to find then. If you stumble on this review from checking all my reviews, you probably think I only review albums by pretty girls; think again. If you can't find this album, hopefully I can make you want another by this great singer...

Ferruccio Tagliavini [1913-1995] was a lyric tenor of a bygone style, what the Italians call "tenore di grazia"....tenor of grace, heir to the legacy of Alessandro Bonci, Tito Schipa and Dino Borgioli. Though he was often compared to the great Beniamino Gigli, that's not really fair to either. I suppose the best comparison from recent years would be the late Alfredo Kraus.

This is a 77' collection of Maestro Tagliavini's studio recordings from the 1940's, when he was in his absolute prime. Most of his best roles are represented...Nemarino...The Duke...Edgardo...Werther. There is a particularly winning duet from "L'Amico Fritz" with the singer's wife, Pia Tassinari. Other roles are here, too; Cavaradossi was a bit heavy, and, as for Andrea Chenier, forget it.

Alas, Tagliavini did not know when to quit; there are recordings from the 60's that should never see the light of day. If you have heard those, or if you don't know this great singer, try to find this. It is a great time capsule of Opera from a long lost, and much lamented, day.
