A good look at another time and place, but people are people,

This is a collection of earthy stories of Russian peasant life from the early 20th Century. It is filled with colorful details showing suspicions and superstitious forces playing out within the grim framework of village life. In this, it is more evocative of the spirit of the Turkish novelist Yashar Kemal than the short stories of Pushkin or Guy de Maupassant. This elegant and nuanced translation flows smoothly, and makes it a perfect read in front of a warm fireplace on a cold night.
