Editorial Reviews

In the summer of 1970, some of the era's biggest rock stars took to the rails for Festival Express, a multi-artist, multi-city concert tour that captured the spirit and imagination of a generation. What made it unique was that it was portable; for five days, the bands and performers lived, slept, rehearsed and let loose aboard a customized train that traveled from Toronto, to Winnipeg, to Calgary, with each stop culminating in a mega-concert. The entire experience was filmed both off-stage and on, but the extensive footage and sound tapes of the events remained locked away for decades, only recently having been rediscovered and restored. The film Festival Express is a momentous achievement in rock film archaeology which combines the long-lost material with contemporary interviews that add important context to the event nearly 35 years after originally being filmed.

After reading the only other review I wanted to set the record straight. As far as I'm concerned, in 5 days of filming the filmmakers came up with 90 minutes of some of the best footage in rock history. Normally I prefer music over interviews and background footage but, watching all the antics that went on during the train rides never gets old. In addition to that 90 minutes of greatness there is plenty of bonus footage. I could sit here and mention scene after scene but I will settle with one: Rick Danko half in the bag singing "Ain't No More Cane on the Brazos" with Janis and Jerry and everybody else. The look on his face and his body language crack me up every time. It's a raw, inside look at the way these people let loose as well as some stellar performances. Festival Express should be on every music fans shelf. Even if you've seen it, get it and leave around for your kids or younger siblings to find and help keep this music alive.

I'm very disappointed that the special features are Not in HD. I was hoping the bonus performances would have been in HD but they are the same as the Standard DVD that I already own. Only 90 minutes of HD. The Blu-ray feature is better than the Standard DVD but not by a whole lot. The audio is 5 star on the feature. The price of this disc should not be more than $10 IMO.

Festival Express documents a 1970 tour across Canada of some special people. The concept was to have a festival concert with a lot of the big name bands of the time, but instead of having the people come to the concert, the organizers thought they would hire a train and move the festival across Canada. The DVD features a lot of Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin as the featured performers, but the Band are featured in more than one song. The story revolves around what happens at the first show, and the aftermath from the concerts from then on. I won't spoil the story and what happens, but the on train footage of the bands mixing together is priceless.

Way behind the scenes of the Canadian "Woodstock" Train. Invaluable Janis and Jerry Garcia footage among some lesser know maniacs. The early Buddy Guy is a treasure and they should have had more of him. Better than the "Woodstock Movie".
