3.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected November 22, 2005
Format:Paperback
I'm sure this is quite a nice book if it's what you're looking for. I was disappointed, however, since it is not actually about celebrating festivals with children. At least, I don't feel that it is. This is a heavily Christian book about the major holidays in the calendar of that religion, and that religion alone. It even contains recommendations for specific gospel passages for you to read with your children! This book deals with

Advent

Christmas

Ephiphany

Passiontide and Holy Week

Easter

Ascension

Whitsun

Saint John's Tide

Michaelmas

Martinmas

Saint Nicholas' Day

Her practices for celebrating each festival are extremely rigid. Brigitte Barz tells me which Saint pictures to put on my festival table (usually this is a Nature table but she has taken it from celebrating the earth straight into the bosom of the church), precisely what color cloths to use, what to read, and so on. She tells me exactly how to celebrate every holiday with my family -- what I can and cannot do -- which I think is a little over the top too. If I were an adult struggling with how to express my faith in daily life this would be a great book for me. If I wanted to make sure my children grew up with strong ties to the church and understood the connections between our modern-day celebrations and the gospels, again, this book would be great. But it didn't work for me.

All Year Round is unapologetically Christian as well but is not rigid or offensive. It gives many suggestions which any family could use, including rhymes, stories, craft projects, recipes and there is a large dose of keeping in rhythm with the seasons.

Waldorf-curric, I see your point, however, I don't understand why you found it misleading. If you go to the Floris Books website, this book is specifically in the Christian section. I don't see how Barz can be faulted for delivering exactly what she promised. This book is ideal for Waldorf practitioners of a Christian stripe, but there many other books that can reach a broader audience, or can be easily adapted to different beliefs.
