I bought this the moment it came out. It is a very impressive piece of equipment and it works incredibly fast--so fast that it takes a bit of getting used to. In my first effort with using the Planex, I found that it was pretty easy to carve in swirl marks if I didn't move the sander smoothly and keep it aligned perfectly flat with the surface. Reminds me of what can happen when you don't use a buffer correctly. The marks were easy to repair. And to be fair, my first effort was a tricky job between beams on a ceiling in a crowded space. In an open room working on a wall, I think operating this would be a cinch. Yes, it's expensive. A thousand bucks is a lot to spend. But I HATE sanding drywall and anything that can get me through this miserable process faster is a welcome ally. The dust control is pretty good. I also used "dust control" Sheetrock joint compound and was very pleased that the combination helped me to avoid creating the usual cumulonimbus cloud. Note: I own a lot of Festool and Fein equipment and am a fan of both. I HATE crummy-ass cheap tools almost as much as drywall dust. Added plus for contractors: count on this to impress customers when you show up with it on the job. You'll look like you just beamed down from the Starship Enterprise.

Like most Festool products this sander has changed the way I look at things. I hated sanding drywall before I got this, and now I don't mind it at all. The dust extraction is awesome. I do a lot of remodeling and usually I spend an hour or so taping a plastic barrier between the living space and the addition/remodel so no dust will cloud the rest of the house. With this sander I no longer need to do that. I still wear a mask, but only because I'm paranoid about dust headaches.
I have used 24 grit in this to sand down rough plaster textures enough to skim coat them, 120 and 220 grits to sand drywall, and even an 40 grit to sand an OSB subfloor that got a little wet and needed some sanding. I bought the soft sanding head for when I sand with 120 or 220 grit, I find it helps cut down on the accidental swirl marks. I use this with a regular Festool dust extractor equipped with the Dust Deputy cyclone attachment that is designed for Festool. The cyclone works great with the dust and almost none of it ever gets to the filter. The variable suction control is nice because you can easily have too much suction under full power. It is just an air valve that reduces the suction at the tool, it does not interface with the variable suction of your Festool vacuum (I wondered this before I bought it). I do wish that Festool had included an extra extension arm as it can only really reach 8 or 9 feet high comfortably. This sander saves me hours and hours of sanding on large projects and I expect it will last me a very long time.

This is expensive and it is high quality. As with every Festool product I own, you pay dearly for it, but the quality is there so you get what you pay for. I used this to sand all the drywall in my 1000 sq ft basement (including ceiling) and it was quick and fairly effortless. It was nice to be able to do the ceiling without needing a ladder, and the dust extraction really made working with it a pleasure. I didn't even need to wear a mask.

I was excited to find an alternative to sanding drywall and was thinking of buying the Porter Cable drywall sander to use in my painting business. I rented one first and while it did a faster and better job than pole sanding, the beast nearly killed me while attempting to sand a 12' ceiling. The PC while reasonably priced compared to the Planex is not comfortable to hold, the articulating head dug into the wall before it swiveled and I had to hold the PC close to the ceiling to keep the sanding head flush with the surface (if not flush, the sander kicks clouds of dust out). After some research I bought the Planex and think it is a great investment. The planex is comfortable to hold, the sanding head easily pivots and you can sand with the Planex at a 90 degree angle with the ceiling (something I could not do with the PC). The vacuum and speed control is easy to reach and adjust on the Planex and best of all, it breaks down to various sizes so you're not stuck dealing with something longer or shorter than what you need. The Festool advertising claims the sander is not that heavy while using because part of the suction from the vacuum holds the sander to the wall or ceiling. The claim is true, probably because the Planex not only pulls the dust in from the edge of the sanding disk, it also has holes in the center where there is suction also. The sander works best coupled with a Festool dust collector. I already owned a Festool MIDI and the sander hooked up to this vacuum and worked very well. Overall a good purchase though it will take several jobs to pay for itself.

I started sheet rocking about 5 years ago and about 2 years ago bought this. I was a pretty good patcher but this makes me one of the top. I do AV so I am always working in finished houses that people are living in the dust collection alone is worth it and it turns a 1/2 hour sanding job into about 3 minutes with no mistakes. I hit it go back over by hand in some spots if it needs it and done. Only recommendation is get the interface pad to add a little give to the pad if you are patching.
