Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The only professional sander that sands open spaces as easily as it conquers corners. How do you move seamlessly between rough sanding and final sanding without switching sanders? It is easy when you own a Rotex multi-mode sander. The design of this multipurpose sander is nothing short of an engineering marvel. Use the aggressive action to quickly and efficiently remove wood, paint, or varnish. Switch to the fine setting for final finishing. Equip your Rotex with polishing pads, sponges, felts or sheepskin and get astonishing finishes that gleam with brilliance. With the new RO 90 DX, add the ability to swap the round pad for a delta-shaped pad to reach deep into corners and crevices. Transform rough surfaces with startling power, stripping stubborn paints and other coatings, and making you the master of all materials. The aggressive mode delivers material removal like that of a grinder and makes your belt sander look like a toy. Shaving off hours of sanding, you quickly and easily achieve astonishing results. Slip on the edge protector to prevent incidental contact with adjacent surfaces. Create sensationally smooth finishes with ease. Sit back in amazement as you gaze at the results you achieved with utter ease. Connected to a Festool dust extractor, work in a near-dust-free environment. Well-balanced, vibration-free. It's like a Zen sanding experience. Equip your Rotex with one of the many polishing pads, sponges, felts or sheepskin and you're ready to buff your finish to a gleaming luster. Use the variable speed setting to dial in the perfect polishing speed for more delicate finishes. The Rotex RO 90 DX can be easily converted from a circular pad to a triangular delta pad in seconds (no tools required). Reach into corners and tight crevices. The gear driven orbit gnaws through the toughest materials and finishes. The lightweight, compact format eliminates fatigue.

Typical Festool quality.

The RO 90 sander is more useful for smaller surfaces like table legs and other flat cabinet components where the larger size would be overkill.

In Rotex mode, you're going to come very close to the aggression level of a belt sander on a lower speed.

I have several Festool tools and this is one of the most useful that I own. I bought this sander after purchasing the Festool RO 125, a 5" random-oscillating sander. The RO 90 is smaller in size, about 3 1/2" in diameter, and also includes a flat plate that replaces the round pad for sanding into corners and tight spaces. It is both a random orbiting (RO) sander and a detail sander with the included interchangeable pads.
I build furniture, and the 5" sander is great for sanding table tops and larger flat surfaces. The RO 90 sander is more useful for smaller surfaces like table legs and other flat cabinet components where the larger size would be overkill. The pointed detail sanding pad is great for getting into tight areas that other sanders can't get into, unless you have one of the multi-tools with the various cutter and sander attachments.
The dust collection with this sander, and the other Festool sanders that I have used, is terrific, also. If you connect it to a shop vacuum, there is virtually no dust in the air with either the round or flat pad, and virtually no dust is left on the surface you are sanding.
Sanding is my least-favorite part of woodworking, but this sander makes it a lot more tolerable than anything else I have used before.

I don't even call it a sander. That would mean that it's like other sanders. It's not at all. In the manual they refer to it as a cutter. It's like the thing knows what your doing. It's like a belt sander that doesn't chew things up. In rotatory mode with 40 grit I have edge sanded a cedar 4x4 down a half inch, in about 30 seconds. Even with 40 on it feels like 100 with and other sander. In delta mode it's like when your watching an infomercial and their making things look like they work so much better than they do, but you get the thing home and it's crap, well with the Rotex 90 your like holy &^%$ it works even better. Anyhow if your thinking about buying on of these, and your wondering if it's worth the money. Like every Festool I own, it's worth even more. I use my C12 more any tool I own, well after my Stiletto anyhow, and I would buy another one instantly if it ever broke no matter how much it cost. If your looking to buy a drill, saw, sander, router, or dust collection, Festool Festool Festool. Once you own one you will look at other tools like they are toys.

best and most versatile random orbital sander i own. though diminutive (approximately 3 1/2" pads plus similarly sized delta pad), it packs a wallop when turned loose on wood. I only use the brilliant adhesives, so i can only comment on them: they take off material as fast as sanders much larger. I recommend without reservation. The *only* downside is the price, but one gets what one pays for. Note, it comes in a Festool Systainer box which is well designed and provides space for extra pads and adhesives.

For those who are unfamiliar with Festool sanders, the design is quite unusual when compared to sanders from big box stores: the adhesives attach to intermediate "cushions" via velcro-like attachment, which in turn attach to the sanding pad via velcro together with a centering snap. this is a must with Festool, because of the costs involved (you're not going to find these parts at wally world, folks. so when you chew up the intermediate cushions on the delta pad, you only replace the cushion for $14 rather than the whole pad for $50.

I'm too cheap to buy the Festool vacuum that attaches to Festools, so i bought the 1 1/4" attachment hose for the shopvac - which works fine with the Fein 921072K13 Step Adaptor ($6.32 @ Amazon). This is the only adaptor that I'd recommend!

The abrasive media is $50/100 sheets, so consumables will drive up the price even further. RO 90DX videos abound on the Internet, so I'd recommend giving them a look before buying if you're price-conscious

I hate random orbital sanders with a passion. The only reason I ever used one was to polish plastics and finishes with MicroMesh discs because they're just so profoundly underwhelming otherwise. Few of them ever remove enough material to be genuinely useful as sanders, they all suck at flattening, and you can never really get away from the horrible pigtails they leave all over the place. While most of them nowadays come with little dust bags or compartments, about five minutes worth of smoothing out an epoxy repair on a window sill is all it takes to cake them up so badly that they might as well not even be there.

The Rotex sanders absolutely obliterate three of these problems and substantially reduce the rest. In Rotex mode, you're going to come very close to the aggression level of a belt sander on a lower speed. Not quite the same, but more than enough power to be dangerous. Thick layers of paint and/or silicone polish infested wood just vanish before your eyes. It is somewhat hard to control when it's up full speed, though, so two hands are pretty much required. It could definitely benefit from an accessory handle/knob on the head somewhere, but it's not too bad off without one.

In eccentric/random orbital mode, you're still going to get a surprising level of aggression but the unit is much easier to control on high. You can still get some pigtails now and then, but they are nowhere near as prevalent as they are on Bosch or Makita's, and given the aggression level, you can get rid of them almost as soon as you switch grits. Whether this is due to the travel pattern or the abrasives, I'm not qualified to say; all I know is they're not a problem for me anymore, even in soft pine.

Having an edge guard is an absolute godsend.
