5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for the Sex-Positive December 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In the revised and expanded edition of Fetish Sex, Violet Blue gets deep into the many forms of desire that a fetish can take in (or out of!) the bedroom, starting with an excellent discussion of the concept of sexual fetishes (and the inaccurate perceptions that many have thanks to mainstream media portrayals that range from the misguided to the just plain wrong), why a fetish is perfectly natural, and busting a few myths. Accepting and understanding personal sexuality (whatever form it may take) is also a major theme, including how to safely and responsibly communicate with your partner about your turn-ons, and suggestions on how to make the experience pleasurable on both sides.

The book also devotes significant time on cataloging and explaining different fetishes and subcultures ranging from a love of fingernails to a need to be used as human furniture, and virtually every possibility in-between. Blue also spends considerable time discussing making the sharing or private enjoyment of these behaviors a safe, healthy, and consensual process for all involved. Health and safety is actually a major part of the work, making sure the reader understands what is and is not behavior to be attempted alone or without a skilled professional available to assist.

The book also features extensive resources to help locating supplies, professional mental and health advice, and positive play environments for the curious and erotic vignettes between major chapters for the reader's enjoyment. It makes an excellent resource for the curious or the sex-positive looking to explore with themselves or a lover, and I highly suggest reading it by yourself...and perhaps making another copy a gift to someone special.

There are many things that this Kindle book is not. It needs to be clarified from the beginning that this is not a clinical study in sexual fetishes nor is it a work of fiction. Instead, Fetish Sex is a work of passion and love from the author, Violet Blue. It is a well put together composition of various sexual fetishes, peppered here and there with erotic short stories by the author Thomas Roche. The reason why I clarify this is because when I went into reading the Kinde version of this book, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I have previously stuck within my comfort level of erotic fiction and spent little time in non-fiction sex writing other than short articles (which I will rectify after this).

Ms. Blue has done an admirable job in this book. From the onset, she appealed directly to me with her confession in the introduction about her own fetish (which happens to be one that she and I share). Her confessional voice changes though to one more of acceptance. She wants the reader to accept sexual fetishes even when they may not understand or share them. Ms. Blue is careful to define fetishes and set the tone of an observer and advocate early on in the book. Her voice is so clear and friendly that many times when I was reading the book, I thought I might be having a discussion with her about this subject (of which she knows much more than I).

At first, I had hoped that there would be a more case study approach. I thought that I might be able to relate better to getting to know an individual rather than a group. But Ms. Blue adopts a summarizing style of writing that defines the group of fetishists and even some subgroups. I complained that perhaps this was distancing the actual fetishist from the reader. But as I read on, she did talk to one fetishist and the conversation was relayed back in the Kindle version of the book. The conversation was so fraught with terminology and language that I realized Violet acts as a link, an intermediary between the world of fetish and the unknowing person (outsider). This was a turning point for me late in the book but one none-the-less. It made me realize how carefully she had translated the wishes and needs of the various fetishists which is an extremely valuable asset to the enjoyment of the book.

Ms. Blue is a lecturer but her voice is not boring or overly technical. She brings fetishes into the open with the hope of bridging relationships. Her book is really a manual for those who might be beginning the journey of discovery of their fetish or in a relationship with a person who has a fetish (which is also me). She presents an amazing amount of ideas for dealing with fetishes and even having fun with them. The book is full of lists and ideas for your relationship. She considers the practicality and expense of fetish as well, giving basic, simple ideas as well as more detailed, specific resources.
Of course, not everyone has all of the fetishes in the book. I found it enlightening to learn of some that I'd heard of but really didn't know much about. Ms. Blue writes carefully about stereotypes and clichés that have been prevaricated in culture. She is ever the advocate for the person with the fetish. However, this does not mean that she doesn't go so far as to condone or excuse behavior that might be dangerous or illegal. There are many references on how to play safely. Also, Ms. Blue does not claim by any means to be a psychologist and analyze the fetishist. She is relying purely on extensive research and is honest about the fact that if you are in a relationship (or trying to deal with it on your own) where your fetish or the other person's is a problem, you should talk to a counselor. About 7% (according to my Kindle) of this book is devoted to resources about the various fetishes.
This is a book that can be read straight through as I did the first time. However, I have since picked it up a few times and read just chapters that I found interesting. In the Kindle version, it's easy to navigate and go chapter by chapter. Ms. Blue also works you carefully into each fetish - going from more understandable and common fetishes (like body parts such as feet and breasts) to more extremes which are an excellent way to introduce those who are unknowing into the ideas in this book.

The erotic fiction shorts by Thomas Roche were also a fantastic way to bring a level of acceptance to the fetish. It appealed to someone like me who needs to relate to the person under discussion (in this case the fetishist). He was creative and erotic about the fetish but also careful to make it not so extreme that it alienated the reader. My only complaint is that I might go back and re-read his fiction pieces by themselves and they were not included separately in the table of contents.

Fetish Sex is a great manual for someone who is just beginning to touch on these ideas. It is straightforward and written in a strong, understanding voice. It's easy to skip around and read chapters that interest you. It is an informative guide that needs to be kept on any educated sex-positive person's Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great getting started guide January 2, 2012
By Livia
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a great getting started book.

What I appreciate the most about how Violet Blue wrote it is that it is meant to be used as a reference manual, consulted on the topic you are interested in, not read linearly like a story. Perfect for people who are surprised by a lover's new interest or just curious about something they read in a novel or seen in a movie.

It is written in not only a sex-positive way, but very mindful of people's most likely negative reactions to certain fetishes (colored by pop-culture and other topics considered "taboo" because people just don't know enough about). But make no mistake, this is is not a politically-correct sanitized read: you can feel Violet's enthusiasm in many of the descriptions and her own preferences come through in her colorful language. It makes it feel like a warm friendly conversation; but with someone who just happens to know a whole lot about fetishes!

Classifying behaviors is a difficult task; she's done an amazingly good job at clustering certain preferences and behaviors together so people can understand the motivations, practices and implications of related things. I am certain that a fetishist of any particular flavor will be dissatisfied by how much it addresses their own interest area, but that's precisely the point of this book: a place to situate people and get them to understand the basics, not fetish X bootcamp -- she does provide extensive references for further research.

The stories written by different authors interspersed among the various fetish descriptions are a welcome variation, making this not just informative and clarifying, but fun and sexy book. Have fun!
