About the Artist

3d5spd's (pronounced "three-dee-five-speed") origins begin back in 1995, when Justin, Chris and Sean, performed under the name Hosaka Science with another singer. Said singer departed, Chris took over vocal responsibilities, Joie joined the band, and 3d5spd was born. Lord knows where the name comes from - if you read any of the communiques issued by the band, you know they are pretty twisted.

Having been labeled as everything from prog-rock to space-rock, new wave to classic rock, 3d5spd has long since quit trying to fit into any particular sub-genre. Instead, these musicians, who take their craft very seriously, strive to create challenging compositions that are strong on chops without any sacrifice on the songwriting front.

During the band’s now 7-year run, it has self-released three records and shared the stage with a variety of indie rock bands and more experimental outfits. Its records have routinely appeared on Atlanta "best-of" year-end lists, and the band placed a song ("Propeller Sky") in the 1999 SPIN College Radio Series.

3d5spd (it'spronounced "three-D-five-speed") is not your typical band. Utilizing a motley jumble of instruments, it seems to specialize in catchy multilayered alternative music with a bit of everything. It's definitely worth a look.

There's the immensely catchy "Situation," the more complicated and eletronic "Now & Again," three short, haunting and scintillating tracks called "Celsius One," "Celsius Two" and "Celsius Three," the rocking "LightWeight," the shimmering "Neon Seasons," the heavy-groove "We Accelerate," and others.

To some degree, 3d5spd resembles the more flamboyant Flaming Lips, except that 3d5spd is somewhat less likably peculiar most of the time. The similarities come through in tracks like the instrumental "Celsius" trio, and even Chris Hoke's vocals. But 3d5spd is very much its own animal; the feel of the music is subtle or fun, depending on what it is. A bit of psychelic, a bit of pop, a bit of rock and plenty of electronic sound. (Since they say their mission statement is "to liquidate dream deficit with decibalization hallucination infiltration excitation," you can see this is not some boyband)

In fact, very few of the songs really sound alike -- there's the songs that are more straightforward rock, but also songs tinged by synthesization and electronic sounds, not to mention the exquisite instrumentals. (The Celsius Trio is among the best instrumentals I've heard) And the lyrics are fantastic, very well-written and never overwhelmed by the wonderful music. ("You see the lights in Vegas are goin' down/'cause even the neon seasons change/they flicker all around you/like fireflies on their wings")

Check out 3d5spd's "Fever in the Ice Age." Wonderfully written, well-performed, and genuinely unique indie prog-rock/alternative music. A good find and a pleasant surprise.
