I am amazed to see this book on Amazon's web site. This is an academic book with all the manuscript sources relating to the group of stories dealing with the Gaelic hero, Fionn MacCumhail as well as some song-poems that deal with Cuchallainn. The prose and poetry are written in Scottish Gaelic. This material was collected and published in response to the controversy created by James MacPherson's poems, supposedly translated from Gaelic originals. Many people thought that there was no Gaelic literature at all. The material in Leabhar na Feinne is genuine Gaelic tradition. The explanatory notes for each poem are in English and may be of interest to folklorists and storytellers. A phonetic spelling of Gaelic was used by two collectors which renders them difficult to read even for someone fluent in Gaelic. Folklorists would be better off studying "Popular Tales of the West Highlands" (4 volumes), collected by the same editor. |
