It's a sad commentary on Italy's aviation industry that the Fiat CR 32 was still on strength while the Regia Aeronautica's primary fighter was its radial-engined successor, the CR 42. Despite their dated technology, Fiat's stylish, robust and manuverable biplanes soldiered on, ending their days as night-fighters and in ground attack. George Punka examines Fiat's biplane fighters in this 2000 Squadron/Signal publication.
A star in the Spanish Civil War, by 1940 the CR 32 was eclipsed by the radial-engined CR 42. Armed with various combinations of 7.7mm and 12.7mm machine guns, the CR 32 was operated by Italy and eight other countries. The radial-engined CR 42, equipped with 12.7mm machine guns, fought over Southern France, Albania, Greece, North Africa and the English Channel. Capable of carrying 440-lbs. of bombs, it too ended its days in ground attack and night-fighting missions. Punka's book includes over 90 photographs along with four-views, scrap views and nicely done color profiles by Don Greer and Richard Hudson. FIAT CR 32/CR 42 IN ACTION provides a good summary of the Fiats' development and war service.
