From the Inside Flap

PREFACE

Fiber optics and telecommunications networks are exploding into the 21st century. Fiber deployment is rampant throughout telephone and tele-vision networks. Convergence is on-going with mergers between syn-ergistic manufacturers, telephone companies, cable television com-panies, and Internet service providers. The face of the communications industry is changing forever.

What drives advanced technology like fiber optics and the telecommunications industry? The need to communicate. For the past 150 years, continuous advances in technology have brought electronic communications to most people in the United States and much of the rest of the world.

The ability to communicate is the foundation for our future. We are moving from analog to digital and from the electron to the photon. Throughout our cities, countrysides, and oceans, pulses of light speed over glass highways carrying enormous amounts of information. Fiber optics is at the base of the revolution that is changing the way we communicate.

Services we never dreamed of will become commonplace. Telephone calls will most often carry full-motion pictures of the participants, and television companies will transmit images that will make today's television seem like the early black and white pictures. Viewers will interact with programming to call up what they want to see, and when they want to see it. Data will consume greater portions of available bandwidth as Internet content improves, ease of use becomes commonplace, and more households avail themselves of the information offered. Fiber optics makes all this possible.

But what is fiber optics and how does it work? Who is using it and what difference will that make?

Over the years, many people have approached me for answers to just these questions. After a few minutes of attempting to delineate the technology and relevant services the technology will afford us, I noticed my listener's eyes glazing over—a sure sign my explanation had failed.

So I decided to draw on my assets. Although I have written more than a dozen books for the fiber optic industry, I am not an engineer nor a physicist. That makes me uniquely qualified to write an informative and interesting book for the layman on “What is fiber optics and just what will it do for us?” By taking the time to put on paper the basic technology and why it is evermore important to our society, I could answer these simple questions in an easily understandable manner. That brought into being Fiber Optics and the Telecommunications Explosion.

It turned out be a harder task than I originally thought. The books I have written over the past 15 years were written for major corporations in the fiber optic industry. In those books, a single word or brief sentence portrayed volumes of information because we all understood the prevailing jargon of the fiber optic/telecommunications world. Such is not the case when writing for someone who has not spent years engulfed in this emerging and advancing technology.

In this book, we first explore fiber optic technology—what it is, how it works, and in what types of networks it is used. Once that is understood, we move to the market sector which includes manufacturers, local and long distance telephone companies, cable television companies, and Internet service providers. Finally, we delve into the myriad of wonderful new services that will be offered to business and residential customers.

This book will be useful to anyone who wants edification on the subject and also to new entrants into the field of fiber optics. Entry level managers and corporation presidents who need to understand the technology and the market will benefit from reading this book. Students and pro- fessors at trade schools, colleges, and universities will find this book not only instructive, but a good reference tool for the classroom and the workplace.

Those who never stop learning in any and all new fields will find this book thought-provoking. Knowledge for the sake of knowledge fulfills us all. We better ourselves and mankind through understanding as much of the world around us as can be assimilated into the vast repository of our minds.

This review is from: Fiber Optics: And the Telecommunications Explosion (Hardcover)
This is must reading for any IS or telecomunications manger or executive. It gives the background needed to help understand the decisions being made today when it comes to fiber optics from the lowest technical level to the stratigic implications. We are recommending this as must reading for many of our clients.
