If You Have Fibroids, Get This Book.,
By
This review is from: Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Well-Being (Paperback)
For any woman who has been given the diagnosis of fibroid tumors, `Fibroids' is a must read. Ms. Skilling has compiled a wealth of information that is easy for the layperson to assimilate, and will help the woman who is in the unfortunate position of having to suddenly make a decision regarding her fibroids. Thankfully, this book is written without judging anyone because of their choice; it is chock full of testimonials from woman who have had every kind of fibroid and every kind of procedure. Inevitably, you will hear your own voice on one of the pages.Since there are currently so many options available to women, the best decision is an informed one. A good doctor will spend time with you to discuss your options, but a doctor is limited as to what he/she can tell you during an office visit. If you get this book and read it cover to cover, you will then be able to discuss your fibroids with your doctor as a very well informed patient. I read with earnest the section entitled "The Fifth Path -- Hysterectomy". Although this procedure is clearly a clear all for fibroids, it is not the answer for everyone; once you read this book, you will realize that you do indeed have other options -- many other options. However, if you feel that a hysterectomy is the decision that is right for you, there is also a section on what to expect during your procedure, and your recovery, as well as testimonials from woman who have gone through the surgery and what they experienced. As soon as I was diagnosed with a sub-mucous fibroid, I searched the web for information and Amazon for any book I could find on the subject. This book appealed to me more than others; primarily because of the title as well as the wonderful reviews it received. There is another book with a title that is less appealing (I shall refrain from naming it) that turned me off because of the blanket statement that it implied. I personally did not opt for a hysterectomy to treat my fibroids, however if I was of a different age and place in my life, I may well have. Thankfully I ordered this book, which gave me all of the options in a sound and positive way. It's your choice; just be informed before you make it. Get this book and you will be.

Fibroids de-mystified!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Well-Being (Paperback)
This book answers every question one could have about Fibroids, and does it in a way that anyone can understand. This is a scary diagnosis, at first, especially if you're told you have one option--hysterectomy! This book is long overdue--it gives the fibroids sufferer options, hope, and comfort. I am giving a copy to my gynecologist and recommending it to all my friends! Thanks, Ms. Skilling!

This book provided me with invaluable information while I was searching for a way to deal with problematic fibroids. It explores all the option available, both surgical and non-surgical, and provides solid medical information in a clear and easily absorbed manner. It's so good that my gynecologist swiped my copy. I have to order another :-)

Help sort through medical mumbo jumbo,

When I got diagnosed with fibroids, I went to Ms. Skilling's book. She breaks down medical terminology into lay language. She brings a sense of humor, warmth and practicality to this book (e.g. wear a two piece outfit when you go for your pelvic sonogram!). She offers guidance and resources, both online and off. I was so glad I had the book as a resource during that period.

Objective and Helpful,
This review is from: Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Well-Being (Paperback)
This is one of the best consumer medical books I have read. I was skeptical at first because the author is a patient, not a doctor. I found this to be an advantage. The book doesn't attempt to sell a specific treatment or viewpoint. Rather it presents a wide spectrum of information, opinions and experiences. It assisted me in looking at my condition in an individual way. I feel comfortable and informed as I begin to explore the different treatment options. As an added plus, I found it to be enjoyable reading rather than something I had to force myself to finish.

This book was one of the most helpful I've found in my years of dealing with my fibroids. Johanna Skilling also wrote a similar book in the First Year series, also excellent. I found the information was well-researched, based on my own years of scouring the internet and libraries for clues to this under-researched health issue. While fibroids aren't a huge problem for some women, for others their lives ARE permanently altered. This book presents the best information available to date, in a manner that is easily accessible to the lay person. I especially like that the author has herself gone through the process of choosing the best treatment option for her own case of fibroids. I came to the same conclusion that she did, and chose the same option for treatment. It was helpful to read someone else's decision-making process.

Pick this up when you're first diagnosed,

This is a great book to calm you down when you first get the scary news. It explains it all very well. Then pick up Allan Warshowsky's (I think that's how it's spelled)"Guide to a Natural Cure." Both are excellent. My symptoms are going away and the last time I saw my doctor she said they had not grown any more.

I finally found this book! This author was a fibroid victim and it makes a big difference because a book published by a doctor is hard to understand and the reports they write are in medical languages. Questions that I've asked myself many months ago, were answered by the author. It is easy to read and understand. This book is a real eye-opener for me, especially when I am going through this the 3rd time. You don't know how much of a relieve it was when I found this book. Unfortunately our bookstore in Chicago do not have alot of books relating to fibroids or such. To end this review, definitely worth buying and is a good source of reference.

This book was immensely helpful when faced with making a decision about surgery for fibroids. The author's straight forward compassionate delivery of information, coupled with stories of women faced with simular situations, made it possible for me to make this very important decision with knowledge and conviction.
