Guaifenesin can work for people. Book is good info., November 25, 2011
This review is from: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel/ Treating Symptoms, Treating Cause (Paperback)
I am sorry the guaifenesin didn't work for the above reader, but it can work for some. The author does state that a small number of people have not responded to the treatment. (10-20%). Also maybe the reader was still using salicylic acid containing compounds at the same time which will cancel out the guaifenesin's effect. There is a list in the book of stuff containing salicylic acid to stay away from. It is the main ingredient in aspirin and in lots of other things as well.
I have just purchased the book and I have been helped by taking guaifenesin. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and rheumatoid arthritis. When I first started taking the guaifenesin I was taking too much (which for me was 400mg/day) and it caused too many bad symptoms as the phosphorous was leaving my body through my lymph system. So I stopped for a few days and went down to 50-75mg day and it is much better for me. I also recommend swimming because then toxins can come out through your skin while swimming, or take epsom salt baths 2x / wk, and or get an ionic foot bath which will pull toxins out through your feet to help with the detox process.
And most importantly, stay away from salicylic acid containing things since they will neutralize the guaifenesin. Although if you find you have been taking too much guaifenesin and the detox becomes too intense (too much pain or brain fog like I had) then take alka seltzer which is effervescent aspirin (salicylic acid) and it will stop the actions of the too high level of guaifenesin. If you don't know your optimum level, start out low at first. Get the kid's guaifenesin which has lower milligram doses. QVC has a generic "mucinex" which is much cheaper and they seem to have a lot of forms of it. Be sure that the formula only has guaifenesin in it and nothing else. Then start out at 50mg/day and work your way up. If you already know you are chemically sensitive, you can go even lower. Just cut the pills into smaller sizes. You can always add, but its hard to take away. Anyway, work your way up til you get to a detox level that is comfortable for you e.g. a little discomfort but nothing major. If it is too uncomfortable, then do what I did and lower the dose, and/or take aspirin to stop the action of the guaifenesin.
To the reader above, just because it didn't work for you, don't stop investigating for yourself. Maybe something else will work. Don't give up. Country life B complex coupled with 500mg vit C and 200mg Solgar magnesium citrate taken 2x/ day can also help a lot. As well as Red Clover tea(relaxing) and Rooibos (roy- boce) (stomach/nausea soothing) tea.
Good luck to all!

A book of hope and information., November 18, 2006
This review is from: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel/ Treating Symptoms, Treating Cause (Paperback)
With insight, compassion, and hope, this book gives an inexpensive and simple (albeit not necessarily easy) "cure" that attempts to treat the cause, not just the symptoms of these debilitating diseases. The book is easy to read, containing step-by-step instructions, and an explanation of an over-the-counter medication that can change the life of sufferers dramatically. There are no guarantees, no hype, no promises (admittedly only helps 80% of sufferers) - just honest information. Diane H. (Arizona)

Don't Be Duped By This False Hope, July 28, 2009
This review is from: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue & Irritable Bowel/ Treating Symptoms, Treating Cause (Paperback)
I admit that I was hoping for great results from this book. Unfortunately it is all hype. What a disappointment. I wish I had read the review of this kind of treatment (guaifenesin-cough expectorant) from the Fibromyalgia Network before purchasing this book. Please save your money and don't buy it. Mine is hitting the trash.
