4.0 out of 5 stars When they say expanded edition, they mean it!, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Fiction (Audio CD)
While I certainly don't mind buying reissues of older, out of print titles, it's a little irritating to see an album reissued just one year after its original release date. I mean, something like the remixed version of Nevermore's Enemies of Reality makes sense, but an Expanded Edition of Dark Tranquillity's 2007 album Fiction seems a bit premature.

Still (and this is where I get down from the soapbox), I love Dark Tranquillity and don't want to miss out on any of their new material, so I grit my teeth and picked up the Expanded Edition. Here's what it has to offer above and beyond the basic studio album:

Audio - The audio CD includes a whopping 6 bonus tracks. The studio tracks A Closer End and the tranquil instrumental Winter Triangle were previously available only on Japanese and Australian versions of Fiction, so it's good to see them included here. The studio songs Below the Radiance and Silence in the House of Tongues (another instrumental) are brand new and exclusive to this release. There are also brand new live versions of Terminus (Where Death is Most Alive) and The Lesser Faith from Germany's 2007 Summerbreeze festival. The studio tracks far outshine the live songs, which don't have the best sound.

Video - The Expanded Edition comes with a bonus DVD that contains 11 videos. The first two are the video clips for Focus Shift and Terminus. The third is a live rehearsal clip of Focus Shift. There are three live songs (Blind at Heart, Final Resistance, and Misery's Crown) from the 2007 Bang Your Head festival in Germany and three songs (The Lesser Faith, The New Build, and The Endless Feed) from the Summerbreeze festival. The DVD closes with a live performance of The Wonders at Your Feet (one of my favorite DT songs to hear live) from the 2007 Gods of Metal festival in Italy.

I'd have preferred to see all of this material collected in another rarities compilation like Exposures, but I have to admit this is a pretty impressive reissue. Six bonus tracks and an entire DVD full of video content makes this a very worthwhile purchase for serious Dark Tranquillity fans. I suppose I can always put my older version of Fiction on ebay.
