The Quatuor Ébène, currently touring the USA and now in the Los Angeles area, is proving that there is far more to the string quartet repertoire than we are used to hearing. 'Avant-garde' barely describes the chances these four young men take in embracing the entire field of music, from their award winning CD of the quartets of Debussy, Ravel and Fauré and another all Haydn CD to this collection of creative works that take a bow to Hollywood. Classically trained, they have studied extensively with the Ysaye Quartet in Paris as well as with the eminent Gábor Takács, Eberhard Feltz and György Kurtág. Their performing standards are high and they are highly regarded for their subtle phrasing and sweeping passion. But they don't stop there. This recording, titled FICTION, has the quartet entering the repertoire of pop and jazz: they can be seen performing on YouTube where it is obvious that using contemporary sound techniques such as attaching mini-microphones to their instruments to give that 'electric sound'.

The works recorded here are adaptations of the music of Hollywood greats such as Charlie Chaplin, Bruce Springsteen, Chick Corea, Harold Arlen, Wayne Shorter, Lennon & McCartney, Brad Mehldau and Nicholas Roubanis. But the selection of songs doesn't explain the raison d'etre for this recording. The members of the quartet have invited guests to join in their interpretations of these songs. The violist Mathieu Herzog sings the 'The Streets of Philadelphia' (rather well, too!) with drummer Richard Héry adding the flavor of the movie original. Richard Héry joins the groups on almost every track on this CD making the quartet sound like a jazz ensemble rather than a like a classical string quartet.

The Ebene String Quartet came into focus when I saw them at the Tanglewood Music Festival in August of this year. I was so impressed with both their classical and jazz performances that I immediately purchased both Fiction and the CD with the three Mozart quartets. I have never heard an ensemble change genres so completely and competently. I think the key is the incredibly wonderful playing of their cellist who clearly gets it in terms of the "groove" for their jazz arrangements - themselves little musical jewels, but also for their interpretations of Mozart which make THAT music sound brand new! This is the best young quartet I've seen since my first introduction to the Emersons over twenty five years ago.

Inspiringly produced album that recasts the quartet as a single instrument playing alongside percussive ones. These works emerge as multiple jazz-ambient-classic-rock-musical-filmic hybrid songs. A very visual music, at times soundtracked but sweet-sounding, occasionally grating, but an always no-hiss high production value, well-mastered, dynamic, so that you might find yourself turning down the volume at times of intensity, instead of listening to the hiss that typically plagues digital symphonic recordings. I highly recommend this well made work. I am told their "straight" quartet work is equally impressive. So, off to hear a little of that. - Kenneth Alewine

I ordered this after attending an Ebene concert on their current tour. They played one of these tracks as an encore after a great concert of Mendelssohn and Schubert. A wonderful end to an evening and just as good here among a disc full of jazz offerings. Incisive playing with drive, all done with a smile. Jazz club standards and pieces from movies are mixed with a smooth hand. Vocal layerings are as varied as the program.
My title refers to the superstar jazz quartet. The Ebene is their equal stylistically. They prove, if you needed it, that the string quartet is a versatile ensemble that can tackle multiple genres. If you come to this group through Fiction, check out their classal albums - the Haydn, F&F Mendelssohn, and Ravel/Debussy are all top notch.
