8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Damon P Schreiber on January 26, 2003
Format: Paperback
I used this collection to get me up to speed on Fiddle music, and it did the trick. The songs are laid out from easier to more difficult. While it helped me get my feet under me, I'd have to say that there are a few weak points that I'd be remiss not to mention.
In the first place, the accompanying CD while long, isn't very well done. I find the playing uneven and really quite unenjoyable. I would hope that authors of such books would want to show how wonderful these songs can sound (played at a slow, even tempo).
The songs themselves are kind of all over the place but there are some good ones. What I didn't particularly enjoy were the exercises included before each song which consisted of snippets of the more challenging bits taken from the song itself. This type of exercise can be improvised on ones own and doesn't need to take up space in a book that could have included more songs if not for these exercises. In fact that's probably my biggest criticism: that the book is so lightweight. It took me too little time to become bored with it, a problem that could have been remedied with more songs and fewer exercises.
But as I said, it got me going on the way to playing more rewarding fiddle music, and for that, I give it its 4 stars.

In a world on too many choices, this book is great for someone who wants to learn bluegrass of old time music. The fact that you get the songs at two speeds is a great help for beginners.

I first got the "Guitar Primer" and when I decided to try Fiddle I knew I was going here first.

This fiddle primer book is excellent for beginners. It came with a DVD that I use on my computer to play along and resee sections. Teaches basics how to hold fiddle and bow and moves in a learnable pattern. The book further illustrates all lessons and can be used independently without the DVD.
