Book Description

November 1997
A sparkling, comprehensive collection of 75 lively flatpicking guitar "fiddle tunes"! Beginning with 18 pages of introductory, performance and tutorial notes. The all-Irish titles are presented in sections: reels, strathspeys, breakdowns, hornpipes, jigs, slip- jigs, set dances, airs and waltzes. All tunes are written as single-line melodies for flat-picked guitar chords over the staff. Additional notes and references, plus a discography are included at the end. Tunes from the book are derived from different cultures, there is little or no overlap of titles regarding the book and "Complete Fiddle Tunes for Acoustic Guitar" (95471). In notation and tablature. The split-track recording includes Dan Gelo's teaching on the various techniques.

About the Author

Dan Gelo was born and raised in northern New Jersey. Dan began studying guitar at age eight and later added mandolin, banjo, and fiddle to his roster of instruments. His teachers included the multi-instrumentalist and composer Eugene Ettore, chord solo stylist John Pariso, and Gene Lowinger, the concert violinist who troued as a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. He developed a passion for roos music of all kinds, from traditional Irish music to bluegrass to rockabilly, and earned a living teaching music and playing ina variety of bands and studios around New York. Dan's admiration for the great folk song collectors such as John and Alan Lomax led him to the formal study of anthropology, and he earned advanced degrees from Rutgers University.

Today Dan is an anthropology professor at the University of Texas in San Antonio. His scholarly publications include articles and books on the music and folk traditions of the Comanche Indians, and three award-winning film documentaries on the Indians of Texas. When he is not lecturing or conducting field work with Native Americans, Dan continues to compose and perform on mandolin and acoustic guitar. Dan's two books, Fiddle Tunes and Irish Music for Mandolin and Fiddle Tunes and Irish Music for Guitar were among the first in the Mel Bay catalog to feature Celtic stylings.

This is a great work if you are interested in playing Irish fiddle tunes. I discovered this music for myself while I was learning the basic of playing guitar. The progam often used these Irish fiddle tunes to demonstrate a technique. I found them fun and interesting to play and they sounded good playing solo. I came across this book in my search for a volume of this music. This book is really good for an advanced beginner - it contains a complete section on technique and rhythm. It's really a lesson book. The songs are composed in both standard notation and tabulature. There are about 75 songs - you'll find something in here of interest to play. I use this book with my guitar instructor to practice rhythm and note reading. I didn't give this book a full five stars because there are some errors in the notation and my guitar instructor has looked at a few pieces and stated there isn't an ending on this piece. If you overlook those minor inconsistencies - this is an outstanding book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Tunes, poor tab, September 7, 2011

This book and CD contains lots of great songs to play. My criticism is with the tabulature. The fret numbers are written only in the spaces in the tab rather than on the correct "string line". This makes the tab very hard to read. In addition, not all of the songs are included on the CD.
