Fine, Fine Fiddling By a Real Missouri Master,
By Alex Scarbrough (Denver, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fiddle Tunes I Recall (Audio CD)
"Old Fiddle Tunes That I Recall" is a truly fine work by an old-time master fiddler of the Missouri-style of the insturment. Lyman Enloe's execution is flawless and uncluttered by excessive ornamention which so frequently obscures the melody in some other old-time fiddling styles. Additionally the recording engineers have done a very good job in balancing the tone and level of the fiddle, guitar, and banjo on the various tracks of the album. Although all of the tunes are above average in performance and production, several cuts really standout. These include: Nervous Breakdown" because of its strange but pleasing melody and complicated key changes; "Lost Train Blues" because of its great imitation of the varied sounds of an old steam engine going up and down the hills whistling and ringing its bell; and Oklahoma Redbird because of its swift and lilting notation. No one who enjoys good old time fiddle music will be diappointed in buying this CD.

Midwest Fiddling at its Finest,
By Brendon Steenbergen (Jefferson City, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fiddle Tunes I Recall (Audio CD)
This is the finest collection of Lyman's recordings that he ever assembled. Each tune shows his mastery of the instrument, and the years of dedication devoted to mastering it. It's only a pity that Lyman didn't record more of his work.

The antidote for newgrass,
By Dixie Diamond "DD" (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fiddle Tunes I Recall (Audio CD)
Don't get me wrong--I like the _O, Brother_ soundtrack, but now we seemed to be plagued with newgrass "old-time". Either that, or people think "old-time" means sloppy bowing, imprecise noting, and poor technique. Little do they know!
This is the real thing, 200-proof and uncut, and the musicianship is exceptional. I wish more of these old-time fiddlers were available on CD.
