Book Description

December 30, 2008
Roland Merullo has consistently wowed critics with his brilliant storytelling and his refusal to be pigeonholed, hopscotching from the coming-of-age tale (In Revere, In Those Days) to the novel-as-fable (Golfing with God) to the road trip genre (Breakfast with Buddha). Now Merullo delivers a dazzling and finely nuanced political thriller about a clandestine plot to assassinate Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Former CIA agent Carolina Perez has spent five years working deep undercover with a singular goal: to take down Castro and free Cuba from his troubled presence. Recruited by a powerful shadow organization known as the White Orchid, steely and sexy Carolina has passed test after test to prove herself ready for the ultimate assignment. Convinced of the rightness of her cause, she will do anything to complete her mission. That includes duping her uncle Roberto Anzar, a wealthy and influential player in Miami’s Cuban American community. But when suspicious details raise questions about her mysterious employer, not even Carolina is prepared for the elaborate web of deceit that surrounds her.

Across the Straits of Florida, Carlos Gutierrez has been lured into playing a pivotal role in the plot to overthrow el Comandante. The minister of health and a member of Castro’s inner circle, Carlos has grown disenchanted with a political system that pays lip service to the Revolution’s egalitarian ideals while ruling the country with ruthlessness, corruption, and lies. As his involvement deepens at great risk to himself and those he loves, the doctor who has dedicated his career to saving lives must decide how much blood he is willing to have on his own hands in the name of freedom.

For both Carlos and Carolina, the threat of betrayal looms large. Who can be trusted in a byzantine network of spies, double agents, and informants? Is the plot real or is it an elaborate ruse to expose the underground dissidents in Cuba? From the sizzling opulence of Miami to the paranoid dreamscape of Havana, Fidel’s Last Days is a dizzying ride by a novelist whose genre-crossing talents know no bounds.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

After two light comedies with spiritual overtones, American Savior (2008) and Breakfast with Buddha (2007), Merullo mines far darker material to construct a powerful tale of modern-day, devastated Cuba and its all but indestructible dictator, Fidel Castro. Ex-CIA agent Carolina Anzar Perez, niece of Roberto Anzar, one of Miami's Cuban-born, anti-Castro expatriates, works for the White Orchid, a secret organization that has masterminded a complex assassination plot aimed at the ever-canny Fidel. In Cuba, Carlos Gutierrez, the minister of health, disaffected from his government, has become a major conspirator in the upcoming attempt. Guarding Fidel is the evil Col. Felix Olochon Marlos (aka the Dentist), head of the dreaded D-7 secret police. The suspense is as thick as an authentic café cubano, and the labyrinthine plot appears to point to a successful conclusion, until Merullo jams the knife in one last time and gives this timely thriller a final, chilling twist. From Booklist

Merullo turns from novels of spiritual awakening (Breakfast with Buddha, 2007, and American Savior, 2008) to a noirish thriller about a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro. Set in contemporary Cuba, the story captures the anxiety of a nation on the verge of regime change. A highly secret group of anti-Castro fanatics centered in Miami hopes to speed up the transition with a daring plan to poison the dictator. Former CIA agent Carolina Perez is the key player in the scheme: she will transport the poison to Cuba, where Carlos Guiterrez, the disaffected minister of health, will administer it to Castro. Of course, the level of intrigue goes far deeper than either Perez or Guiterrez realize. Merullo not only constructs a highly suspenseful, believable thriller; he also captures the mood of a country “living in the rubble of ruined promises.” The typical landscape of Cuban noir—splashes of color set against images of decay—is captured vividly, but Merullo goes further, taking the reader into the minds of ordinary Cubans and revealing an uneasy mix of fear and determination. Pair this with Jose Latour’s Comrades in Miami (2005). --Bill Ott

More About the Author

Roland Merullo was born in Boston and raised in the working-class city of Revere, Massachusetts. He had a scholarship to Exeter Academy and graduated in 1971, attended Boston University for two years, transferred to Brown and graduated from Brown in 1975, then earned a Master's there--in Russian Studies-- in 1976. Roland has published ten novels and four books of non-fiction, and given talks at hundreds of universities, schools, bookstores, and other venues. He currently lives in Massachusetts with his wife Amanda and their two daughters and can be reached via his website: RolandMerullo.com.

His best-selling novel, Breakfast with Buddha, recently went into its 12th printing. Like Golfing with God before it, and American Savior after it, Breakfast with Buddha treats questions of philosophy/spirituality from a multi-denominational viewpoint and with a healthy dose of humor. The novel is provocative, not irreverent, and it has become a favorite with book clubs all over the country. It was based on an actual trip Merullo took from New York to North Dakota, most of it in the company of his wife and daughters. Golfing with God has just been optioned for film by Gemfilms.

His most recent novel, The Talk-Funny Girl, is the story of a teenage girl in rural New Hampshire who escapes an abusive home life in a most unusual way. It follows a theme that can be found in almost all Merullo's books: a person overcoming some past trauma, whether that be the stress of war, illness, divorce, addiction, or early abuse.

The Talk-Funny Girl, has been named a 2012 Alex Award Winner. The Alex Awards are given by the Young Adult Library Services Association to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18.

Several old favorites--Leaving Losapas, A Russian Requiem, Passion for Golf, Revere Beach Boulevard, and Revere Beach Elegy, have just been reissued from AJAR Publications, in print form and as e-books. AJAR has also brought out Roland's small book of writing advice, Demons of the Blank Page.

GOLF WRITING

Merullo has a side-speciality, golf writing. His articles and columns appear frequently in Golf World Magazine, and his golf books include GOLFING WITH GOD, THE ITALIAN SUMMER, AND PASSION FOR GOLF.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly killer, May 14, 2009
This review is from: Fidel's Last Days: A Novel (Hardcover)
In the Godfather Part II, the Corleones pay a visit to Havana at the very moment that Castro is overthrowing Batista. The film director, Francis Coppola, captures a chaotic, frenzied nation, desperate for political change. Swirling Caribbean colors, hot Latin passions, intrigue, treachery ... he captures the pulse of the island nation in turmoil, in some of the most memorable cinematic moments of all time.

In Fidel's Last Days, Roland Merullo, hastily re-creates some of this temper as a similar modern day coup d'etat is hatched against the Cuban, self-appointed Maximum Leader. Merullo paints a good picture of a chaotic Havana, an impoverished nation and failing Communist dictatorship.

But the book is no thriller. As spy fiction goes, the plot is mundane and predictable. Twist ending? Hardly. Merullo hints at the ultimate resolution multiple times throughout. The main action revolves around two characters: one, Carolina, a female ex-CIA operative who now works for an anti-Castro organization, but who is little more than a carrier pigeon. She makes plane flights, and changes clothes a lot. The second is Carlos, the Cuban Minister of Health, who duels with Castro's henchman, the head of the dictator's security forces. The main action in which these two heroes are involved seems to be sweating, nervous twitching, and adopting disguises. The Health Minister is forced to prove his loyalty to the Castro regime, and one gruesome scene ensues, but otherwise the story is devoid of action. No car chase, no computer codes cracked, no rooftop races, very little steamy romance ... this story cannot be headed for the Cineplex. An assassination attempt with topical cream?

And my pet peeve: a paragraph-long discussion of the greatest boxers of all time - in a book about Cuba - and no mention of Teofilo Stevenson.

I read this novel straight through, in two sittings, and I only stopped because I had to go to work. But it is compelling, well written, fun, and literate, too. The characters are intriguing, the set up is great, and it couldn't be more timely. Merullo is a fine writer, fully in charge of his material and his language, and one of the pleasures of reading this book is watching him at work. Not one false step. Frankly, I am amazed that this book isn't climbing the Best Seller Lists. And maybe it will yet.

A stunning ending! Suspenseful and yet not a "cheap" thriller. A good evocation of Cuba and the many and complex issues that country faces.
