4.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Rescue!
I was reading the Easy Field Guide to Common Desert Insects of Arizona to my 6 year old grandson, hoping it would suffice for the high plateau country of Southern Mexico where we just moved. While looking at the big line drawings and simple text of the book, we noticed a large spider crawling down the wall. With the help of the book, we identified the spider as a...

3.0 out of 5 stars A black and white book
Be aware that all the books in this series are in black and white. Thus one can't compare the colors of the insect one is looking at to the pictures. I view this as more of a beginner's book for young children.

With the help of the book, we identified the spider as a poisonous fiddleback and escorted it outside. I thought the book would be too simple for my needs in Mexico, but so far it has helped me with both scorpions and spiders.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ouch, what just bit me?, April 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Easy Field Guide to Common Desert Insects (Easy Field Guides) (Paperback)
Living in Nevada, spiders and scorpions are more common place than I care to admit. It's important to know what just bit you while you were sleeping and this book is a good way to start.

I originally purchased this book simply to get my total up enough for free shipping, but was pleasantly surprised with the content. It's a basic guide with clear diagrams and descriptions of each insect. The spider sketches cannot be used as currency, but I still found this book quite valuable for the menagerie that is my backyard.

If you live in the desert and want a small guide to help you figure out what's crawling on your ceiling, this a great way to start.
