5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant, Exquisite, and Classy as Ever, November 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Field Day (Audio CD)
The new double CD of acoustic pieces is an aural treat for not only Anthony Phillips fans but also lovers of romantic/impressionistic music in general. Once again, Mr. Phillips has shown his willingness to maintain his integrity and perform the sort of heartfelt music that he does best and without concern for trends. Here, the reclusive guitarist performs a total of 61 pieces for 12 string Alvarez, Guild, and J.M. (John Marlow) guitars, 6-string Brook and L'arrivee guitars, Fylde Cittern, Ramirez, Yari, and Mirecourt classical guitars, Bell Cittern P.H. (Paul Hathaway), Parlour guitar P.H., 10-string J.M., Fylde English bazouki, Greek bazouki, mandolin, and charanga, ...and all in his inimitable style.
The primary danger of doing a double CD containing well over 2 hours of all-acoustic instrumental music is that it could potentially become too much of one picture in very short order. Despite the risks, the current batch of Phillips pieces is varied enough in tempo and length - only 7 of the 61 tracks are longer than two and a half minutes - so things never once get boring or tedious. And talk about variety: there are jangly pieces, whistful tunes, lilting melodies, and a number of the vibrant, leaping-about-and-dancing-all-over-the-place type as well. Along with the wisely varied pacing, the artist has sequenced the pieces quite effectively so that each of the sundry aforementioned instruments is allowed just enough time to reveal its individual ring and color in his dexterous hands before being turned over to the sonorities of the next.
With two exceptions, all of the pieces on Field Day were written between 2001 and 2004. The compositions sound both familiar and at the same time warmly refreshing, and while there are too many to detail here, the 12-string pieces are to this writer a pure delight, "Concerto de Alvarez" being of special merit. The two visits to former days include Track 7 on CD 1, titled "Steps Retraced," which is in fact a beautiful solo 12-string guitar rendering of the song "Traces," appearing first as a full-band arrangement on the Invisible Men LP way back in 1983. The second is Track 9 on the same CD, in which its writer revisits 1975's "Nocturn" from the second Private Parts and Pieces album 'Back to the Pavilion' in 1980. Here, it is affectionately played on Ramirez classical guitar.
It is appropriate that this has come out in the autumn - in this writer's mind, at least - as the music herein does indeed evoke vivid, colorful images of this melancholy season. That said, 'Field Day' would be welcome in any season, as its rich, vibrant, and sensual qualities are easily imagined as playing equally well against a quiet snowy backdrop or a lush pastoral landscape such as the beautiful sepia-toned one that graces the inner jacket. Buy and enjoy this fine release for a long time to come.

Echoes of Genesis are still clearly heard on this collection. But why should one be surprised - Anthony Phillips was the founder of the guitar sound of Genesis, solos, arpeggios chords and all. Steve Hackett merely stepped into his shoes when he joined the group in 1971. To this day "Trespass" continues to haunt him musically, and as soon as he picks up a stringed instrument (apparently, it's been a while, although you cannot really tell) be it bazouki or charango or a 12-string, the old magic comes pouring out of it. There is nothing particularly new on this collection, except perhaps the unusual instruments, but the music is wonderful, and the fans will be rewarded with a trip down memory lane. It's as if it were another installment of Parts & Pieces, perhaps wedged between Parts II and III? Definitely ranks among the best ones.

Particularly wonderful are "Tearaway", "Tania", "To The Lighthouse" - possibly the best and the longest piece, "Out And Beyond", the unabashedly romantic "Beyond the Castle Walls" - Ant at his most Genesis-like. Most other pieces are short and focused, each one complete in itself, with the exception of a multi-part suite on Disk 1. Many other pieces are miniatures, but very complete, like the impressionistic "Flotsam & Jetsam"

A reviewer was asking with reverence, "Where did this come from?" - I suppose the answer to that is: it came from that same magical and timeless well as Trespass and Geese & the Ghost did, and that well is far from dry. It may be known to some as "Romanticism", and it looks like Anthony has drank deep from it this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever, June 21, 2006
This review is from: Field Day (Audio CD)
This new release from Anthony Phillips comes highly recommended. It is at least as good as anything done before and better than some. There isn't a single 'lesser' piece on this two-CD set. I'm a long-time fan and have many recordings; this is superb. I was a bit concerned that some of the pieces might be filler, but not the case. There is magic here; sustained excellence throughout. If you love Phillips, or have have a feeling, poetic bone in your body, you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long time fan, July 1, 2007

In my early teens I was blown away by guitarists like Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin. In my junior year of high school I stumbled upon the music of Anthony Phillips. Rather than being blown away I was deeply moved by the beauty of his compositions. Listening to Field Day is like picking up a conversation with an old friend. From the exuberant "runaway Horses" to the introspective "nocturn" this is one of his finest recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anthony Phillips Has A Field Day, October 25, 2006
This review is from: Field Day (Audio CD)
"Field Day," the latest album from former Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips, is a double album of solo acoustic guitar pieces that Anthony mostly recorded between 2001 and 2004. Playing various guitars, including 6-string, 12-string, charanga and bazouki, Anthony serves up a beautiful 2 hours-plus of marvelous solo guitar performances (61 in all). "Concerto De Alvarez" and "To The Lighthouse" are especially stunning, but the whole album from start to finish is a breathtaking beauty. A fantastic showcase for Anthony Phillips' composing & guitar-picking genius, "Field Day" is phenomenal.

According to Ant himself, Field Day is a return to his old beloved guitar, which he had temporarily forsaken for the keyboard work he did for television. Well, it's a triumphant return. Two CDs full of Ant on guitar is a delight. As usual, there is no virtuoso showing off his skills - just Ant, recognizable in every note and every harmony. Dreamy, soothing and uplifting. Disconnect the phone, let the autumn sunshine fall through the window and drift away. To coin a phrase: this is beauty I know, Im in love with it all. God bless Ant.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this if you love anthony phillips, November 6, 2006

i recently purchased Field Day, and it is delightful. Anthony has made a delicious return to his stringed instruments, unaccompanied stringed instruments, no less, and he uses a variety of 12-string, classical, nylon, etc. guitars and other lutes to portray his musical imagery. i am a hardcore fan of Anthony Phillips, and i have all the classic recordings, and i'm pleased to announce that i'm very satisfied to have Field Day as part of the collection. He delves into the old "Private Parts and Pieces" style of playing. i highly recommend this set of two discs to anyone who loves Anthony's music. there is no filler on this album, only great music!!!!! : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, March 2, 2007
This review is from: Field Day (Audio CD)
With unanimous five-star praise from reviewers, it really isn't necessary for me to write a review, but this CD is so worthy of praise, I've chosen to write something.

I completely agree with another reviewer who said that Field Day is elegant, exquisite, and classy. It can also be said that many of the pieces are beautiful, tender, moving, and sweet - in that magical way so unique to Anthony Phillips. The CD certainly reflects his greatest maturity as a composer and seems like a labor of love. After listening to the entire CD, I felt so touched and moved. He has a great capacity for beauty. There is no one like Anthony Phillips.

Not all Anthony Phillips CD's are equally good, but being a fan since The Geese and The Ghost, I can say that this clearly is as good as the best he has made, if not better. It really is excellent. All you Anton fans, you really should get this!
