Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

David Doty's new field guide is the most fact-filled and comprehensive coverage of carnival glass in print today. The scope of his achievement is staggering. Using hundreds of computer-enhanced photos and a database of actual sale prices for more than 37,000 items, the author has created a user-friendly guide for identification and value. All classic patterns are described and illustrated from A to Z, and entries include a listing of known shapes and colors in each pattern. There are price ranges and rarity ratings for each item, and the 32-page color section includes even some rare carnival colors. He shares valued advice about attending auctions, distinguishing fakes from originals, and what to collect. "Everything you ever wanted to know about carnival glass" is an apt summary of David Doty's exciting new A Field Guide to Carnival Glass. Much more than a price guide, this book is an indispensable "bible" for all carnival glass lovers. The convenient size (6" x 9") is perfect for collectors on the move.

About the Author

David Doty attended carnival glass auctions and conventions for several years before realizing that nobody was systematically recording the marvelous and unusual pieces of carnival to be found. In early 1993, he began photographing carnival wares at conventions and auctions. The growing stacks of photographs, together with the auction sales prices he had been cataloging in his computer database, gave Doty the raw material for a field guide such as this one. After investigating ways to share his knowledge with new collectors, he finally decided on doing a book. Doty's goal was something portable for collectors to carry with them, that included a great range of shapes for every carnival pattern. What resulted was a "gold mine" of a reference work on carnival and pattern glass.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource, December 3, 1999
This review is from: A Field Guide to Carnival Glass (Paperback)
As a collector of carnival glass, I'm always looking for as much information about my hobby as possible. One of the most frustrating things I encounter as a collector is that I often don't have enough information, or worse yet, wrong information. Dave Doty's book is an invaluable resource that clearly and concisely presents information on carnival glass - from the mundane to the extremely rare. Price lists are usually a nightmare for authors writing about collectibles, since most quoted prices are often a reflection of the purchaser's and seller's moods at the time of sale. Dave Doty has gracefully dealt with this sticky area by quoting actual auction and sale prices in a range format, and giving extra information and explanations for those items which brought a price outside of the range. This very well presented book is a definite Must-Have for every carnival glass collector!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop! Look no further, your bible for hunting Carnival., March 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Field Guide to Carnival Glass (Paperback)
I found the book notes rareties by color as well as pattern. If you want just one book to carry on your hunting trips for Carnival Glass you can not do better! The prices are realistic. Only thing is it is geared more for the advanced collector when looking at detailed pictures. There is an excellent color section by a top-notched photographer.
