A Field Guide to Desert Holes is the first of its kind, a book focusing on one of the most common natural features of the desert. It provides an easy and enjoyable way of making sense of the bewildering array of divots, mounds, dust baths, depressions, holes, and shelters found in the Sonoran Desert and the desert Southwest.
There are numerous field guides in print on animal tracks and scat, two of the best known methods of tracking the movements and activities of wild animals. Interstingly, holes, depressions, and shelters used by animals provide an equally useful, but largely neglected, method of learning about the activities and habits of animals. This small guide, which includes over 60 illustrations of holes and the animals who use them, provides a first step toward using this field observation technique.
