Good information, but needs photos,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Field Guide to Desert Holes (Paperback)
This tiny book is chock full of information and organized in an easy-to-read format. Unfortunately, the detailed descriptions of the holes, burrows, and depressions did not in any way help me visualize them--especially because many are similar. It would have been extremely helpful to see photos of the "desert holes" and the animals/birds/insects that make/use these areas. There are some black and white pencil drawings; although scarce, they are helpful. If this book had photos, I would have given it a rating of 10 stars!

We use it when camping and hiking. It is great if you are planning on visiting and/or camping in the Southwest. I would agree though that there needs to be more color pictures and more drawings to illustrate exactly what the author of this book is talking about. An excellent reference that makes visiting the desert so much more fun.

We love this book!,

The previous reviewer is right: this book could use more illustrations. But we love it anyway. If you live in the Southwest, and especially if you have kids, you need this book. I keep giving our copy away, and since the local store doesn't order enough, here I am at Amazon!

Not really that useful :-(,

I did not find this book very useful. Poor photos and drawings. I would have a difficult time 'IDing' a tortoise burrow, and will find it difficult to know a K-rat hole form another rodent. I would not recommend this book to a friend.

For folks who love nature and want to know "what dug that hole in my yard?" this has the answer. I saw this book in a store and was sorry I didn't purchase it. I was happy to find it at Amazon. Great selection and nice small "field guide" size.

I really like this book. It was in great condition and answers questions that I had about what's living in the desert.

Nice illustrations, but wish there were more,
This review is from: A Field Guide to Desert Holes (Paperback)
The book is fun to read, but I have to agree, that identifying the holes would have been much easier with either photos or more of the pen and ink drawings -- which we really love. The drawings are fairly detailed, very nicely done and help quite a bit when provided. You don't often get that kind of detail in a such a niche book.

Better than I thought it would be,

This book reviewed more than I thought it would and included animal behavior that was nothing less than fascinating. The book was better than I thought it would be in many ways (like the diversity of animals described and the wonderful color photographs in the middle), but it is also true that there are not as many pictures of holes as I thought there would be. Nevertheless, it appears to be a good introduction to possible desert species that can be found in holes. I would recommend it to anyone interested in nature. I will teach my Boy Scouts about what I learned in here.
