Book Description

October 14, 1996 The Peterson Field Guide Series
This is not a guide to identifying rocks, but a guide to land formation. It shows how to recognize the key field marks and how to use them to read geological history: plate movements, earthquakes, glaciers, rivers, seas and other forces that have shaped a particular patch of earth over millions of years - and are still shaping it. Each geographical region of eastern North America is described vividly and illustrated with detailed maps and cross sections, as well as color photographs that show the characteristic field marks of the different formations in the region. Highway tours tell where to go to find the best examples of the various formations and to get a clear sense of the history of the land.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for amateur geologists..., August 11, 1999

This review is from: A Field Guide to Geology: Eastern North America (The Peterson Field Guide Series) (Paperback)
This book is a good introduction to the overall principals of geology as well as to the specific geology of the eastern US. There's lots of diagrams, maps, photos and an easy to read text. Sections include background information about geology, the major geological features of an area and what you would see along the major highways of that area.

This is written as a field guide.
but is uncomfortable to use. It is hard to turn the pages and to keep the book open.
I was disappointed\
I was not looking for a field guide!

I like John McPhee's books on the the geology of the US.
Mc Phee travels across the USA with the experts.
His books are informative and fun to read.
