Book Description

October 1, 1998
A beautifully illustrated guide to the larger and more frequently encountered African mammals. Individual accounts with range maps for over 200 species provide information on each animal's description, distribution status, habitat, behavior, food, and reproduction. Excellent coverage of the larger, more familiar species, plus limited coverage of some smaller African mammals including hedgehogs, hyraxes, hares and rabbits, and squirrels. Exceptionally well illustrated with over 400 color photos, b/w footprint diagrams, maps, indexes to English, German, and French common names.

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, May 2, 2000
By
This review is from: Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa (Paperback)
I bought this book a long time ago when it was first published because I was looking for some information on primates and carnivores of Africa. When I found this book I wasn't disappointed! There are full colour, clear pictures on every page on primates, hoofed mammals, the elephant, carnivores, the aardvark, hyraxes, pangolins, rabbits and hares and the rodents. The carnivore section is the best but they all show original photographs and accounts with distribution, status, behaviour, a map and breeding habits of each animal or a group of them. Every picture has a caption saying where the photo was taken or a special feature of that mammal that makes it different from any other. There are no negative comments I can make on this book because it is clear, informative and with lots of pictures which can help your studies whether you're going to Africa or not!

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, February 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I encountered this book in South Africa at the game preserve where I went on a brief safari. In the process of looking for the book after I left, I found that most other guides have drawings, not photographs, to show the animals. The photographs alone are worth the price. There is also information about physical characteristics, distinguishing features to help identify the animal, habitat, behavior and rarity. Many have pictures (not photographs) of their tracks. Delightful and fascinating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Guide Book for African Mammals, May 30, 2011
I am a biology student with a specific interest in large African mammals. My husband bought this book for me and it has proven useful. It is a great quick guide for a wide range of animals.
