Good overview of "common sense" dating advice.,
By ShawnaGambol (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
While this book is put out by a Christian publisher it is not overly religious, but the kind of advice you would receive from a wise friend on how to take relationships slowly and prudently to prevent common dating and relationship disasters. It gives good examples from psychology literature and samples of actual relationship experiences.

Much better than I expected,

This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
Some may say that the advice given in this book are all common sense and that may be true, but it is not a common practice. After reading this book I found out that high divorce rate and marriage problems are not only because people choose a unsuitable partner but just as well because of poor marriage preparation. If you are single and dreaming of a happy marriage, reading this book may help a lot to make your dream come true and save you from disaster.

So good!,

This book is not for your teen heartbreak. This is serious stuff. It has so much good information in it! For those going through the loss of a spouse, a fiance or other "serious" (read: long-term) relationship--this is a great place to start when you are ready to start moving on.

Great Insight,

This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
I personally thought this book was very well written. It is geared for singles who are over the age of 30. I thought she made some very profound points and insights. While reading it I got the distinct impression that I was really learning something from the Author. I think it is written in such way that it has a wide appeal. If you were to buy it and read it I cannot help but think you would be very pleased. I have found myself going back to the book on occassions to think again about some of her thoughts. She definitly has depth when it comes to the subject, and it shows in her book.

A Very Satisfied Reader,
This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have read on the subject (and I've read many). I agree with other reviewers that the author does an excellent job of combining the practical with the spiritual. I only wish this book had been available many years ago when I first entered the dating scene. I could have saved myself a lot of heartache if I'd followed the principles outlined in Smart Love.

Never Start Dating Without It,

This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
This book was great. It teaches you how to take your time in a relationship and get to know a person first before getting too involved. I think all adults who are on the dating scene should read this book and even if you don't agree with everything in the book or follow all of the advice to the tee, you will still be more knowledgable about how to conduct yourself and how to deal with the opposite sex while dating.

Comparatively good book on the subject,

In regards to whether this book is worth buying or not I would say it is because of a few of the ideas it introduces. One of the best ideas that was expounded in the book was the idea of BTN (better than nothing). Often in the dating relationships we form we settle for something mediocre because we believe it is better than nothing (which is probably true) and because of fears we all have of the unknown, but fail to realize that we could do better if we ended the relationship (as opposed to becoming stale in a BTN relationship) and looked to start anew with a different relationship.
Some other important ideas that author contributed was avoiding being unequally yoked (relationships of people of people of diametrically opposed politics and religious beliefs pretty much doomed, something which had been recently verified in my past two relationships), the important of marriage counselling (reduces divorce rates by about 70-80%), and how videos of prospective dates can be informative as to what kind of person they are. However, despite the considerable amount of good info in the book there are some really dumb ideas. 1. Is the idea of waiting 2 years to enter into another relationship after a breakup (come on I only have so much time on this planet) as well as the waiting several weeks if not months to show any kind of physical affection (good luck getting any chemistry...) This book is a good book its just that some of the ideas she presents are irritating and others are pretty good (there are plenty which I haven't mentioned) and you have to be patient and discerning when reading the book.

This book provides a great guide for all of us today. It stresses the importance of taking things slow in relationships. The advice given in this book is a great alternative to what the media tells people to do when it comes to love. Recommended.

Great resource for singles and others,
By Charmaine M. Miller (Wilmington, DE United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Field Guide to Love for Single Adults (Paperback)
This book is a very good resource for people who have a lot of questions about what to expect in a marriage and how to decide on the right person to marry. The author did extensive research and although I did not find a lot of scriptures to make me think it was a very religious book, I cannot take anything away from the book. She gave you the broad picture. A very practical view of relationships and the common mistakes people make when they are in a relationship or while they are in pursuit of one. The Bible is the first authority on how we should govern ourselves in relationships and that position came across in this book. In addition to research from various psychological sources used, Ms. Van Pelt used examples from the Word to illustrate her point (though not overly so). There is a good mix in this book of the practical and the spiritual. Many people can avoid the pitfalls of relationships by following some of the advise in this book. I enjoyed it immensely. I recommended it to a few of my relatives and friends who were in difficult situations and needed to make a decision. It helped them to see the light!
