Book Description

May 1, 1991
This new field guide to mushrooms includes the main species from all groups. It concentrates on the more sought-after edible species but also includes many inedible and poisonous ones. Each species is represented with one or more large colour photographs which face a detailed description of the species. This gives information on form, colour, spore colour, habitat, distribution and' edibility, enabling the naturalist or mushroom collector to identify each species that he or she finds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Mushrooms of Britain, April 8, 2000

This review is from: Field Guide to Mushrooms of Britain and Europe (Paperback)
An excellent photo-guide that would have been far more useful to me six months earlier.

Amongst the clear concise information in this volume is the fact that the Stump Puffball is inedible unlike the other true puffballs. The field guides I had last October all said that all the Lycoperdon were edible if eaten young, firm and white. All stating this to be true of the Pear-Shaped or Stump Puffball, Lycoperdon pyriforme.

As some readers may be eating their lunch I will not describe the symptoms that I suffered.

The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because it isn't bigger. It could do with covering a few more species.
