Book Description

1933265248 978-1933265247 March 1, 2005
The American religious scene in 1955 was a very tame and predictable world. It matched the tame, predictable world of women's clothing, where most women going out shopping wore a dress with coordinating gloves, hat, and shoes. And it matched the tame, predictable world of children's toys, where almost every young girl yearned for a baby doll that said Ma-Ma, and almost every boy needed a coonskin cap. Choices of fashions, toys, preachers, and churches were limited and domesticated. Fifty years later, the tame, predictable world of 1950s fashions and toys is long gone. Women go shopping in everything from sweatshirts and jeans to tube tops and short shorts. And both boys and girls want the latest Sponge Bob Square Pants video game. The same kind of transformation has gone on in the world of religion. It is no longer tame and predictable either. Welcome to the Wild World of Religion of the 21st Century. Explore its habitats, identify some of the inhabitants, and learn about their characteristics and customs in this Field Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion, June 4, 2005
This review is from: Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion (Paperback)
The "Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion" is a book written in such a captivating way that I found it hard to put down. The author Pam Dewey puts you right into the picture. She traces the development of the church that used to be to what it is in today's world. Many new terms have been coined that make the point clear. An example on page 28 is "The Wal-Mart-izing of the local church scene."

The subject of churches and religious leaders we look to is deadly serious and worthy of critical analysis. It is the best and most interesting discussion on the subject I have ever encountered. For example, would it be a good idea to join the charismatic church that your friends have just started attending? She gives information on that movement and criteria to look at.

There are two reference-type chapters: Chapter 9 is the "Religious Lingo Lexicon" and Chapter 11 is the "Who's Who Digest" of the movers and shakers in today's religious world. This information can save a person valuable time in learning about who you might want to affiliate with.

"Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion" would make an excellent gift for friends. Young people in particular can benefit from the many years of experience and research by the author.
