Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-- As in other wars, a unique vocabulary developed during the Vietnam War, and these words and phrases form this dictionary of more than 5000 entries. Listed are important terms and phrases of the period: acronyms, nicknames, code names, place names, technical terms, and slang expressing what was happening at home. Vietnamese words picked up by American soldiers are also included. This is ideal for those students interested in the effect of historical events on language. It should also develop an interest in new words that evolve from the war in the Persian Gulf.

From Library Journal

The simultaneous appearance of two Vietnam War dictionaries presents an irresistible opportunity for comparison. Each of the titles under consideration is built around an A-Z dictionary format which identifies most of the significant technical terms, acronyms, and slang expressions of the period. Reinberg's In the Field is a basic word list consisting of some 5000 simple definitions. It is a sober and thorough job, but not invariably accurate. Although acceptable for many purposes, the work suffers by contrast with Words of the Vietnam War . Besides having twice as many subject headings, Clark's entries are much more detailed and are heavily cross-referenced. They often develop into mini-essays, sometimes ironic or humorous in tone, which encourage free reading and random browsing. Recommended for all reference collections.
