All versions (lines, blank, graph, dots) are very good.
60+ and still having fun
After doing a little research and wanting something that I could easily carry in my back pocket and/or in a satchel, these Field Notes Notebooks were the perfect size!

These are great notebooks - well made, flexible and pretty cheap.

As an engineer, I've kept small notebooks with me forever in order to write down field walkdown notes or ideas. My old company used to provide the "Field Notes" brand notebooks and they always did well and took a beating at numerous industrial sites. After a number of years of having to buy my own small notebooks, I decided to go back to the original and the best. Bought these direct from Field Notes as they were on sale and no sale tax.

The "dot-grid" books are just that: each page has parallel rows of dots that can be used as lines or graph paper, making for a very versatile page for taking notes or drawing sketches. The black covers stand up well to abuse in my rear pockets, only occasionally showing some damage. The covers are made from 100 pound paper, and the inside paper is a heavy 50 pound bond. Whatever writing utensil I use (pen, pencil, and sometimes marker) does not smear or bleed through, and while the paper is not waterproof, a few large raindrops don't seem to affect the ink or the paper.

While a more expensive than similar size notebooks at WalMart or Staples, they do stand up to punishment better and definitely look nicer when you whip it out.

Only con with this one (well, maybe not really a con): the inside of the cover, where you are supposed to write your name and contact info, also is black. I needed to used a silver permanent marker to add my info.

Finally, for a really good-looking Field Note book, check out their "Shelterwood Edition" with covers made from real wood. Pretty sure they wouldn't hold up as well in my back pocket, though.

I am a reporter who has to take quick notes at a moment's notice when I'm out in the field, and I've tried a healthy variety of notebooks, never finding one that really "clicked" for me. Until I came across Field Notes.

It's not one big thing, but a lot of little things that make these great. They are thin and flat, and easily slip in and out of my back pocket when I'm out in the field. If I forget and leave my Field Notes in my back pocket when I sit down, they are flexible enough to bend and conform so it isn't uncomfortable or jarring, and the notebooks are sturdy enough to handle that stress. The printing for the grids and lines is clear enough to be a visual guide, but light enough to fade to the background if you write big or sketch over it. The inside back cover is a quirky list of "Practical Applications" (things you can use the notebook for), along with a breakdown of how the notebook was made (Made in the USA, if you're curious).

I also like the 48-page length (that's counting front and back) -- it's long enough without being too long. I've used notebooks with nearly twice as many pages, but in my opinion, that's too many notes for a single notebook, and it becomes cumbersome to find things that I've written. When I near the end of a Field Notes notebook (after filling it with notes), it feels like a very natural point to switch to a new notebook. (Your mileage may vary on that point.)

I really like the classic brown Field Notes covers, but the seasonal "Colors" editions make for a nice change of pace -- I go thru several notebooks a month, so it's nice to switch back-and-forth between standard and special editions.

These are the perfect size, great paper and the dot-grid is a cool design. I use them a lot on photo trips to keep notes on images. This fits perfectly in a pocket or small camera bag.

After doing a little research and wanting something that I could easily carry in my back pocket and/or in a satchel, these Field Notes Notebooks were the perfect size! I do like the pages with the lightly colored dots and it makes is just a bit more attractive than plan pages or lined pages.

I have been carrying one of these for about 3 months now and I even forget that I have it on me! So far it's holding up well to being carried everyday and used. Now I just need to get my Fisher Space Pen and I'm set!

I would recommend these for sure to anyone waiting to a good little notebook to carry everyday!

These are far and away my favorites. I have owned and used several notebooks, you can probably find my reviews for them around amazon, many were very good (Rhodia A7 staple-bound pocket notebook, other Field Notes products), but these are just perfect. They are a little thinner than my old go-to, the Moleskine pocket cahier, making them more expensive per sheet than the Moleskine, but the thinness works, making it easier to get in and out of pockets and more flexible when in the pocket. The thinness was a disappointment when I first started carrying Field Notes, but I have grown to prefer it. I love the dot grid on this particular notebook and I wish Field Notes would make it available on their full-time range and not just on some special editions. I like the paper. I know that is subjective and their is a lot of negative commentary from fountain-pen-users about feathering and bleed-through, but they seem to have sought, and achieved balance when designing this book: it takes ink from my pens just fine, dry time is good, plus it also does well with pencil and eraser.
