This is a wonderful book with a great back-story. The author was all set to publish it through a traditional house when they backed out. Ms Sala decided to publish it herself. She made the right decision.

Poppy Sadler is crushed to learn that her mother has died of cancer during the night. Then the police show up to tell her that her father has been murdered that same evening. During the journey to find the killer, Poppy learns a secret about her mother's past that pushes her to further investigate. Fortunately for Poppy, she has the help of her older brother and a police detective who is inspired by her strength, and who falls in love with her spirit. And, she has the unexpected help of someone she should have known all along.

I have been reading for 59 years, and I have read everything Sharon Sala has written. This may be her best book to date. Kudos to her for her courage.

Sharon Sala's stories always manage to make me laugh and cry and sometimes in the same scene! This is another fantastic example of human interaction and love. The story is a wonderful, in depth, masterpiece. This book is just one of many reasons why Sharon Sala is on my auto-buy list. Fans will not want to miss Poppy's story of determination and triumph. The plot and characters are addictive, I couldn't put it down until I read the final word. It is a beautiful, moving story that lingers in the mind. I'd love to see more from these characters and this town in the future. I'm sure I will be going back for a re-read very soon. Congratulations to Sharon Sala on her first self-published e-book.

My mom actually read this book first. She reads about three books a week and in 45 years I can't ever remember her ever insisting that I read something she's read. She likes reading but I've never seen her excited about a book until this one. She said she couldn't put it down once she started reading it and was up all night. I asked her why it was so great and she just said, "Read it. You'll see."

So I read it.

There have been a few books amongst the thousands that I have read that have always stayed with me because they took me to a place where the characters are distiled down to the essence of what it means to be human. They are set firmly in the reality of relationships, prejudices, economic truths and social strait jackets and yet they shine through it all like the sun exploding into the ink black vacuum of space. A Painted House by John Grisham came close, A Light in August by William Faulkner was right on the edge of it. The Help by Katheryn Stockett takes an entertaining stab at it. A Field of Poppies by Sharon Sala absolutely nails it to the wall kicking and screaming and it doesn't let you go until the very end.

This one will stand the test of time and will probably end up in your grand kids American Literature class.

A departure from the "norm" for Sharon Sala, Field of Poppies was turned down by the big-name publisher, because of fear that Sharon's fans wouldn't "follow" her into an another genre. A big fat raspberry to that. There has always been a down-home honesty in her books that sucks the reader in and doesn't let go until the very end of the story. Field of Poppies exceeded my expectations--as a long-term fan of this author's work, my expectations were very high. I couldn't sleep Sunday until I had finished the book, which was awesome. As always, I was touched by the sense of unconditional love of family, regardless of DNA. I'll bet the publisher is wishing for a do over. Bravo and well done! '''

Another superb story from one of my favorite authors. This one takes you through a full range of emotions, from crying to laughing. I felt such empathy with the characters I didn't want the book to end. Sharon's definitely got a gift for writing, and I'll look for her name no matter what genre she writes. She can describe the sound of a furnace cutting on and make me feel warm, or the way the little snowflakes are blowing around at a funeral and make me feel cold. Not many authors can put me there in the story. When I find one, I'll stick with her.

I can't add much to what the other reviewers have said--it's just a darn good story with a deeply satisfying ending.

Thanks Sharon, for another great read!

Sharon Sala's A Field of Poppies reminded me of the very reasons why I fell in love with the romance genre. This book has more heart written into each word than any other book I've read in years. It will make you cry, it will make you laugh, and it lends meaning to forgiveness. Ms. Sala takes readers on a journey with Poppy Sadler following the death of her mother, and the brutal murder of her father. The book itself is full of the kind of plot twists expected from Ms. Sala, what is unexpected is the sheer emotional journey she takes with Poppy. It is a simply wonderful journey of love and forgiveness. This book was almost not published because the normal places couldn't see where it would fit into today's current market, oh how wrong they were. This book is exactly what the current market needs!
I loved everything this book had to offer, from the strong characters like Poppy and Justin, to the outright nutcase in Prophet Jones. If there is one book you buy this year make it A Field of Poppies as it is sure not to disappoint! Thank you Ms. Sala for making sure the world has it's chance to read this stunning piece of work.
