Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3--In this unusual book, a farmer plants a field of sunflowers. Readers are led through the growing cycle, with botanical terms in boldface print and full-color photographs. As harvest time approaches, picnicking families, photographers, and artists arrive to enjoy the beauty of the flowers in bloom. The farmer then decides not to harvest the seeds, and the field turns into a gigantic bird feeder. The last page reads, "The end?" as three sunflower seeds float on the white background. The combination of purposeful information and the creation of an artistic, ecological happening seems oddly jarring; on the other hand, there is beauty in both illustration and concept. An interesting discussion could ensue about the reasons crops are grown. A hybrid addition to the large field of sunflower books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Field of Sunflowers, October 10, 2000
By A Customer
This book was a great book which showed the reader beautiful photographs of how to plant sunflowers. I would like to grow some sunflowers next year and make a sunflower house just like they did in the story. I especially liked the photo which showed the artists who came to paint the field of sunflowers, then toward the end of the story the farmer invited his friends and neighbors over to have a dinner party on the lawn under the oak tree next to the field of sunflowers. This was a beautiful book which certainly inspired the reader to become interested in sunflowers if he wasn't already.

4.0 out of 5 stars A tribute to life's beauty, masquerading as a children's book., July 13, 2010
This review is from: A Field of Sunflowers (Read with Me Cartwheel Books (Scholastic Paperback)) (Paperback)
This is no ordinary Scholastic book. Neil Johnson has created, with almost thirty photographs and a generous serving of agricultural and botanical terms (in boldface), a compassionate tribute to the sunflower, which despite its relatively short life cycle, provides lasting benefits to people as well as animals. I believe the farmer profiled in the book, and indeed its dedicatee, is Gordon Boogaerts of Gilliam, Louisiana.

Docking one star for the less than optimal photo reproduction. I know this is an inexpensive Scholastic (Cartwheel) title that retailed for three dollars, but the content really deserved better. Contrast and brightness need to be adjusted, or perhaps the issue is cheap paper/ink; in any case, portions of many photos are in shadow.
