Always nice to complete the Great Man's catalog. I have a few to go. Silly comedy but nice quality and some classic Burns & Allen and Fields.

W.C. Fields second funniest film,
This review is from: Six of a Kind ~ W.C. Fields, George Burns, Gracie Allen (DVD)
'Six of a Kind' concerns a cross-country trip. Fields has a two week vacation, and he and his wife decide to go to California. Fields' wife advertises for a couple to share expenses. George Burns and Gracie Allen (and Gracie's dog) join them. I think this is one of Fields' funniest movies, second only to 'It's a Gift' (also involving a trip to California). Please see them both.

Not Really a Fields Film,

This review is from: Six of a Kind ~ W.C. Fields, George Burns, Gracie Allen (DVD)
This is a Burns and Allen DVD, packaged as if it were a Fields movie.
"Six of a Kind" does not star Fields. It stars Charles Ruggles and Mary Boland, and features George Burns and Gracie Allen. Fields is a minor character, who has one great scene (the pool table scene), one fair scene with George Burns (where he doesn't sell him a sweater), and that's about it. The movie, despite being directed by Leo McCarey, is deeply mediocre. The DVD and the case's label appear printed on a cheap home printer, and while this film is owned by Universal, it appears to not be licensed by them, and an "A1A" watermark appears in the lower corner of the screen. I suspect this is bootleg: the licensed copy appears to be on the DVD of Here Comes Cookie / Love in Bloom / Six of a Kind. Either because "Six of a Kind" runs only an hour, or to make "Six of a Kind" appear better by contrast, the manufacturer of the DVD has stuck another Burns and Allen movie, Here Comes Cookie / Love in Bloom / Six of a Kind onto the DVD. However, the copy of "Here Comes Cookie" is baldly missing several chunks (it lacks, for example, that film's staging of the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" with Gracie as Juliet). This entry in Amazon, and the DVD's packaging, all suggest that this is a film that stars Fields. One of the reviews of the movie here suggests the part played by Ruggles was played by Fields; I have to suspect that review was a plant by the manufacturer. If you're looking for a Fields film that you've not yet seen, I suggest Tillie and Gus. If you want to see Fields' pool table scene, you can find it on You Tube. |
