Book Description

Ruin Mist Chronicles March 28, 2005
Fields of Honor is the continuation of Robert Stanek's multilayered epic fantasy adventure begun with Keeper Martin's Tale and continued with Kingdom Alliance. In his acclaimed Keeper Martin's Tale, he introduced us to the story of Ruin Mist, an extraordinary world of magic, adventure and intrigue. Now in the eagerly awaited follow-up to Kingdom Alliance, he once again proves himself a wonderful storyteller with a gift for fast pacing and believable storylines. Already hailed as a classic, Robert Stanek's powerful series has been enjoyed by readers all over the world. The Elves of the Reaches returned from exile, bringing grave news. War came to the Kingdoms. Many perished in the turmoil and unrest. An attempt was made to kidnap a princess and assassinate a king. Now, from the ancient past a dark power returns. "The Fourth Wind blows across the mountain tops," they say. And the Twelve Clans emerge from myth and memory. As prophecy becomes reality, the factions struggle for control, only to further divide the lands. Some would say that King Andrew Alder foolishly agreed to support the Elves of the Reaches, sending men to aid their cause when the causes of all Men in all lands were being put to the test of steel. And in the North, men back their words with action. Against a backdrop of treachery and intrigue, murder and mayhem, the price of free will is high. Many will pay with their lives. Many will succumb to imprisonment and enslavement. For when alliances shatter, old hatreds rise anew and the plotting and scheming begin. Bold, inventive, brilliantly imagined, Fields of Honor is a novel of magic and wonder-a tale of pure excitement you will not soon forget.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Heroic fantasy series are plentiful these days, mass-produced without any regard for quality. Robert Stanek's Ruin Mist Chronicles bucks this trend. Keeper Martin's Tale and the other books in the series represent years of labor during which the author filled out the backstory of the land, the politics and the characters. Copious supplements--maps, glossaries, and illustrated cast lists--show Stanek's commitment to worldcraft. No matter how fascinating a fantasy world is, it fails if not animated by a compelling story and Stanek gives us not just one, but three, tales in Keeper Martin's Tale. One story follows the bored, rebellious Princess Adrina, who flees her moribund kingdom in search of adventure. Another thread concerns the peasant boy Vilmos, whose forbidden magic powers attract the interest of both good and evil forces. Finally, Seth, a warrior priest and part of the Elf Queen's elite personal guard, sets off as an envoy to the human lands. A prolific non-fiction writer, Stanek's focus on instruction influences his fiction with a penchant for clear and simple prose. Stanek's military expertise as a decorated Air Force vet who served in Gulf War I also informs his written work. He enjoys stories of complex strategies, alliances and espionage, like those in his past. He also prefers swift, action-oriented scenes. Keeper Martin's Tale is solidly built. Stanek moves among his three main characters with ease, always switching at a climactic moment to maintain suspense. The accessible, brisk language keeps things moving: "Crying out in the darkness, alone, afraid and drenched in sweat, Vilmos woke... The whole of his small body shivered uncontrollably. Opening eyes and uncurling his huddled form from a corner, moist with perspiration yet still cold from the night's chill, was a slow, time-consuming process." -- Clar Reviews, June 1, 2007 --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

More About the Author

I'm Robert Stanek, and I've been writing stories for nearly 30 years. Though I've always been a writer at heart, I never set out to be a writer. What I wanted to be, I didn't know when I said goodbye to high school. What I wanted to do though, I knew that: I wanted to see the world--and so I did while serving my country in distant lands.

I wrote novels for more than ten years before I ever tried to get published. My big break came with a book about publishing--only a different sort of publishing than you may be thinking. The book was about web publishing and so my career in writing began. While I wrote those other books, I wrote many, many stories and books for my kids, and I collected them for a few decades, until at my children's urging I set out to get them published for others to enjoy.

I am the second youngest of five children, raised by a single mom. While stationed in Hawaii with the U.S. Air Force and working shift work, I went back to school and earned my bachelor's and master's degrees from Hawaii Pacific University. After an 11-year career in the military, I moved with my wife and children to Washington State. When I'm not writing, I can be found playing video games, reading books, or trekking the great outdoors in search of adventure with my wife and children.

It's been a fairly open secret I also write as William Stanek. You can learn more about me at http://www.robertstanek.com or at http://stanek.reagentpress.com. Find me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/RobertStanekAuthor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really, truly poor writing, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Fields of Honor (Ruin Mist Chronicles) (Paperback)
Robert Stanek's work is the most poorly written fantasy I've
ever had the ill luck to buy and read. I guess everyone's tastes are different, but he'll never become popular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stanek's Best, June 1, 2005
By
Barry Hu (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fields of Honor (Ruin Mist Chronicles) (Paperback)
This is a great series. It's so rare to find a series where each book is better than the one before it. This is by far Stanek's best book to date.

The whole series does a wonderful job of telling a truly epic tale. Over the three books the author touches on many topics and paints a beautiful portrait of the world that has been put together for the characters. The characters are all easy to identify with, and the reasons for their actions where clearly understood. This book is very exciting and I found myself staying up late to find out what happens next.

The whole series is worth reading by anyone who enjoys a well written, epic story, set in a fantastic place and time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think most other people will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, deserves the praise, October 25, 2005
After 3 solid performances, I don't know why Robert Stanek isn't more popular than he is. He continues to weave together an interesting yarn that is the perfect blend of mystery, fantasy and action. Unlike Jordan and Goodkind, each book advances the plot, the characters actually grow and learn, and none of the books are mired in endless repetitive rehash. That in itself is an achievement.

As with the previous books, the cast of characters continues to grow and change with more than a few excellent additions. I continue to see why Ruin Mist Chronicles is compared so favorably to Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, Eddings, Brooks, Feist, and Eddings are sure fans of these masterfully written books. I'm beginning to think that frustrated Jordan and Goodkind fans may find these books refreshing as well, I certainly do.

Incidentally, the BEST NEW VOICE IN FANTASY win was for this book, and I have no doubt this is the best book to cross my desk this year. I can't wait to get Mark of the Dragon.
