No other Virology book has told me what Field's has. This is by far the book with the most useful information available. Made for freshman students to PHD handling the knowldge to comprenhensive level yet not simplyfing it. It's just amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for professionals or post-graduates August 17, 2009
Considered by some as a "virology bible", this text is an extremely well structured and informed piece of work. The current 5th edition is as up to date as a 2007 virology text can be, given the rapidly expanding nature of virus research. As mentioned previously the primary focus of this text is mammalian virology with a significant proportion devoted to human clinical virology.
This text is tailored more to the post-graduate student or virology professional and makes an excellent reference text with lengthy bibliographies for those who require starting points for further individual research. I would not recommend this text for undergraduates with no significant experience with virology as the content will perhaps overwhelm.
I highly recommend this text, even though it is expensive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Once again, Amazon sends only Volume 1 December 9, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
5-star book, 1-star service.

As for a previous reviewer, Amazon sent only volume 1 of an expensive two volume set. Their service is usually excellent, so I am surprised that after screwing this up once for another customer, they still didn't get it right. I am sending it back and ordering it directly from the publisher.

My one-star review is intended as a rebuke to Amazon, not to the authors. Make no mistake--this text is excellent and a critical reference in its field. It definitely deserves five stars. But neither the authors or Amazon's loyal customers are well served in this instance. Definitely buy it--just not from Amazon. They've had the opportunity to fix their problem, and didn't take it.
