Book Description

January 5, 1996
Fieldwork Under Fire is a path-breaking collection of essays written by anthropologists who have experienced the unpredictability and trauma of political violence firsthand. These essays combine theoretical, ethnographic, and methodological points of view to illuminate the processes and solutions that characterize life in dangerous places. They describe the first, often harrowing, experience of violence, the personal and professional problems that arise as troubles escalate, and the often surprising creative strategies people use to survive.
In "writing violence," the authors give voice to all those affected by the conditions of violence: perpetrators as well as victims, civilians and specialists, black marketeers and heroes, jackals and researchers. Focusing on everyday experiences, these essays bring to light the puzzling contradictions of lives disturbed by violence: the simultaneous existence of laughter and suffering, of fear and hope. By doing so, they challenge the narrow conceptualization that associates violence with death and war, arguing that instead it must be considered a dimension of living.

More About the Author

Carolyn Nordstrom is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame. She studies wars, the illegal drug trade, gender relationships, and war profiteering. Her research has made her an eyewitness and scholar of worldwide urban and rural battlefields as well as of the shadowy worlds of diamonds, drugs, arms and smuggling. In addition to her teaching and lecturing, she was recently awarded John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships and has written dozens of articles, and several books. Having struggled for years to fit the world's roiling multiplex realities into an academic universe too small to accommodate them, she is currently writing a book challenging the academy to update its theoretical foundations for the twenty-first century.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic and widely relevant, March 26, 2009
This review is from: Fieldwork Under Fire: Contemporary Studies of Violence and Culture (Paperback)
This is a fantastic read. It is useful and relevant for all field workers, regardless of whether or not they expect to encounter violence. These authors address everyday realities in challenging situations. Many of the issues they discuss are encountered by all fieldworkers--these issues simply become more consequential in violent circumstances: how to deal with rumors as sources of knowledge and historical narrative, how to distinguish information from rhetoric and stay critical during interviews, and how to make our research relevant to the communities we study. Highly recommended.
