The first thing you need to understand about this release is that it is meant to be tongue and cheek. 1.0 out of 5 stars Misfits Meet The Nutley Brass
If you like Richard Cheese, quirky covers, Squirel Nut Zippers, Misfits, Louie Prima, SAVE YOUR MONEY.
I like the Devo and Ramones EZ listening covers but this is lame Casio synth organ horns, not lounge music. Think Mystery Science Theater closing theme. (Sorry Joel! Big Fan).
If you realy want this album and you live in Los Angeles, I plan to wing my copy...

4.0 out of 5 stars If you're someone that takes your music seriously you might not get it, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Fiend Club Lounge (Audio CD)
The first thing you need to understand about this release is that it is meant to be tongue and cheek. It's not meant to be a serious interpretation of the Misfits music, it's not meant to destroy everything that the Misfits stand for; it's just meant to be fun. It is worth noting that it's quite impressive how the Nutley Brass was able to transform the Misfits music from heavy punk rock into shiny elevator music. "Last Caress" sounds like a classic game show theme with its combination of percussion, trumpets, and tubas.

"Astro Zombies" never sounded so chipper with its xylophone accents. "Where Eagles Dare" has a Middle Eastern tinge to it, and sounds like something Goldie Hawn would have danced to during the breaks on Laugh-In. "Some Kinda Hate" could have easily fit in with the musical Grease or any Frankie Avalon movie. "Teenagers From Mars" has a cartoon-ish feel with its xylophone heavy tones and scat-style vocals. Eerie space sounds, heavy brass, and piano dominate "Skulls". After hearing the Nutley Brass' version of "Die Die My Darling" I realized it may not be so bad to die.

The Bad
Nothing notable

The Verdict
The Nutley Brass does an outstanding job of interpreting the Misfits music in an unconventional style. If you enter the lounge with an open mind and a fondness for the Misfits, you're sure to have a good time. If you're someone that takes your music seriously you might not get what this CD is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Tribute CD.., July 5, 2005
This review is from: Fiend Club Lounge (Audio CD)
I just got this cd, listened to the whole thing and all I have to say is this is hilarious! I highly recommend this if 1. you love the Misfits and 2. you have a sense of humor. If your looking for some deep meaning in this cd, you don't have the right sensibilities to appreciate something like this. It's the kind of thing that is so ridiculous it's brilliant. Very entertaining and very original. When you think of the Misfits song lyrics, and hear the orchestra playing the songs in this style of music, it's really very funny. It's like the soundtrack to a cult horror movie, that is if the movie was "Texas Chainsaw Massacre on Ice." I love weird stuff like this, and I'm sure these interpretations will wind up in some movie. It's also a nice presentation and comes with a cool drink coaster too.

Also, this was not done by Jerry Only, (as some of the habitual, boring Jerry bashers would like it to come off as). It is done by an orchestra called the "Nutley Brass", and their intent is to be funny, which it is. It says that very clearly inside the CD. The same orchestra that did the Ramones Songbook (elevator music versions of Ramones songs) did this one. It is a novelty album, and it represents itself as such. It is a tribute to the Misfits. Joey Ramone, called the Nutley Brass Ramones CD "clever genius" and I agree with that. The same applies here. Again, if you don't have a sense of humor, a love for Misfits songs, or appreciate the genre of "outsider" or weird music you will NEVER get this.

I enjoy listening to a C.D., at work ,that only I know the words to. I't's safe enough to play in the gift store I work at and I can hum along to Die, Die, My Darling and none of the customers know the true evilness of the songs. Some of the songs on this C.D. took some time to grow on me,but others I loved immediately. What a fun way to cover these songs!

This album is what it is: a Lounge tribute to classic era misfits. Not the schlock of Jerry Only but well done instrumental lounge of danzig era misfits. I must say its genius. If I heard this in an elevator, I'd ride it straight to the top. Its supposed to be silly, almost ludicrously so. thats the strength of it. Now, take off your serious caps, don a fez, grab a martini and relax to the loungy goodness.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is, July 4, 2005
This review is from: Fiend Club Lounge (Audio CD)
I gave this 4 stars because it is what it is, it's a novelty cd and that's it. But what could have been done with is more of a swing, big band style with vocals and a little guitar wow that would have been great. But all in all it's a great cd for hold music i know that's what i'm using it for or even elevator music. So all in all it's still not that bad of a cd could have been ten more on it but hey that's just me. Would have loved to hear some of the michale graves era songs on it.

Punk Rock has an ability to take itself WAY WAY WAY too seriously. Projects like this are great for reminding us to lighten up.

I found this disk cheap this weekend and it has given me quite a laugh! I've always enjoyed the sing-a-long catchiness of classic Misfits tunes... the lounge covers here, even at their worst, remind listeners of that simple, nerve-hitting catchiness that the Misfits did so well. I respect the fact that the band has allowed their "golden age" songs to be vulnerable to this novelty project. The cries of "Sell Out" here are pretty ridiculous too, as the band no doubt knows it's fan base and how many will NOT dig this. It wouldn't shock me if this whole effort LOST money in the process...

I think what cracks me up most is hearing all the proto-evil Glenn Danzig lyrics translated into puffs of Hanna-Barberra "Wacky Races" style lounge cheese. There is a level of prescision and attention to detail present that I do feel respects the original songs. It's witty and unusual and really harmless.

** There's a "Black Velvet Flag" album of lounge covers of classic LA Punk in a similiar vein, though I think this one is done a little better.

4.0 out of 5 stars die die my darling., October 15, 2005

I am a big, long-time Misfits fan, old stuff and new, and I thought this was a great project.

it's not like Richard Cheese, where some dorky lounge guy sings the songs all funky - instead, it's just instrumental versions of some old Misfits classics, done in some different big-band musical styles. The styles actually change a lot, often in the same song, and there's more depth to this than you might expect at first.

punk purists mught hate it, but I think it's cheery driving music.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you didn't get Black Velvet Flag, you won't get this., August 11, 2005
This review is from: Fiend Club Lounge (Audio CD)
Classic Misfits songs redone in a jazzy/lounge style? Genious. It's different. Some will like it, some will hate it. No one can deny the fact that it's pretty damn original (I highly doubt the Nutley Brass has any knowledge of Come Recline with Black Velvet Flag) Same idea..take something timeless, and put a different variation on it. It's a good piece to add to the collection. Well, happy listening and if you don't get it, thats your problem.

Okay, so this isn't the traditional grind one would associate with The Misfits. That being said, if that's what you're looking for, turn back, spend your money on something else, you've been warned. However, if you like a bit of goofiness every now and then, and can handle the change up, check it out, I can't help but crack a grin when listening to the Misfits set to really bad elevator music. If you can handle Plan 9 From Outerspace, which really is so horrible that it's entertaining, then by all means, pick this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A differnet kind of cover album., March 5, 2006
This review is from: Fiend Club Lounge (Audio CD)
First things you should know are this:
1. The whole album is instrumental.
2. The music is not Punk.
3. It sorta sounds like Misfits songs played by an orchestra.
4. There's a 50/50 chance you'll like it.
Now, I myself enjoyed this album. It was quite pleasent to listen to. The album isn't very long though, 4 or 6 more songs wouldn't hurt. It is a totally original style of music. Its hard to really describe what it sounds like. It's not something you jam or bang your face against the wall to. Its more what you sit back and relax to while having a smoke. Only those with an open mind will enjoy it. If you're one of those punkers who look like something out of Stephen King you most likely won't enjoy it.
