Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Reviewed with Elaine Landau's Killer Bees.

Gr. 3-5. Books in the Fearsome, Scary, and Creepy Animals series cover animals with bad reputations. Fierce Cats looks at lions and tigers, ignoring other wild cats that you wouldn't want to meet on a dark night (leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, etc.). Killer Bees deals with the Africanized bee, which fairly recently arrived in the U.S. after a long trek from Brazil. Both books follow a similar format, with anecdotes of attacks on humans interspersed with more conventional information on the habits of the animals. At times the information provided is somewhat confusing. For example, the distinctions between the Africanized bee and the more placid honeybee are not always clear. Similarly, the information on lions and tigers could have been better organized. Many color photographs are included, with lots of bared fangs in Fierce Cats and swarming insects in Killer Bees. Although most of the facts presented can be found in other books, reluctant readers will appreciate the short sentences, and the stories of mass stingings and unwanted chewings will have surefire appeal for some kids.
