4.0 out of 5 stars joyful, beautiful ayuhuasca light, September 9, 2008

This review is from: Fiesta Amazonica (Audio CD)
Merl Saunders has been a true, working musician since the late 50s, playing blues, jazz, soul, jamming with Grateful Dead and recorded one of the best albums of the 20th century "Blues From The rainforest", together with his lifelong friend Jerry Garcia.

This album is well-played and inspired with a stellar cast of musicians. Steve Kimock plays a blistering solo on the title track. Narada Michael Walden has co-written the ear-grabbing "Child's Play" and plays some trademark virtuosic drums on "Eduardo". Chuck Rainey lays down the funk on the opening track, Rob Wasserman provides Jaco-like fills throughout. The inimitable Muruga Brooker, who also played on "Blues...", spreads his percussion bliss. Trio Bulgarka adds depth and magic.

There is a moving tribute to Garcia "Nostalgia For jerome" with some exquisite guitarwork by Michael Hinton. But a bit too often a certain blandness creeps in. Joyful, uplifting, infectious for sure. In fact the perfect record to start the day with. Psychedelic and profound? Not really. Except for a 3 min. simple of Jerry, from the "Twilight Zone" soundtrack, where suddenly the (inner and outer) universe opens up.
