Amazon.com Review

First manufactured in 1936 during art deco's later, less ornate phase, Fiestaware went out of production in the 1970s but returned in the 1980s and now enjoys unprecedented popularity. Older pieces fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars at auction. The new line offers the original designs in contemporary colors at affordable prices. To complete a set of cobalt Fiestaware, these thick, heavy mugs are essential. Made of vitrified china with a gleaming, lead-free glaze, the mugs hold 10 ounces, are perfect for hot drinks and soups, and are both dishwasher- and microwave-safe. --Fred Brack

2.0 out of 5 stars bad handle, November 30, 2000

I love Fiestaware (that accounts for the two stars) but can't stand these mugs. The tiny loop handle requires you to thread one finger through and rest the rest of your fingers or hand on the cup -- hello, if I wanted to hold a hot cup in my hand, I wouldn't get a mug with a handle on it.

Take a look at the handle on the big cup, Fiestafolk, and take a hint. Now THAT'S a handle.

3.0 out of 5 stars It burns, it burns!, May 19, 2004

I really love my fiestaware, but these mugs are enough to suck the joy from the whole set. I wish they offered an option of practical (non-jumbo) mugs, so that fiesta purists could have these and people who want practical drinkware could have something comfortable.

The problem, as others have noted, is the handle. However for me it's not really the awkwardness of having to support the mug with just one finger. Rather, it's the way you have to brace it with your other fingers against the burning hot mug. The thing conducts heat like mad, and even the thickened bit under the handle is too hot for me to keep contact with for more than a quick sip. A mug should not be painful to use! I wind up holding it with two hands on the top and bottom edges, or waiting until it cools and drinking my beverage cold. That's if I use the mugs at all--we gave up on them and keep a separate set of mugs for our use and mostly just bring these out when we care if things look nice and match.

These things have been around forever, and it's obvious that a significant percentage of people just hate them. I just can't understand why over the years they haven't come out with an alternative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meh., October 16, 2003

These are the most bizarre coffee mugs I've ever owned. Yeah, they look really neat, but the "handle" is just a little circle that's hard to grip.

If you like holding your coffee mug with just your index finger and spilling the contents all over the place, this is the mug for YOU!

The capacity is very small, too. All of my other mugs hold a good deal more than these.

I wouldn't buy these particular mugs now that I've had them (they were a gift!) nor would I give them as a gift to anyone else. Does Fiestaware make another kind of mug? Maybe they're better-designed than these ones.
