Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?This stunning photo-essay describes the explosive happenings surrounding the celebration of the feast day of San Juan de Dios, the patron saint of Tultepec, Mexico, a town famous for its master pyrotechnists. Ancona introduces Caren, her family, and neighbors as they prepare for this elaborate annual fiesta. With the building of bamboo frameworks for papier-mache bulls and spinning wheels of rockets, the town is ready to celebrate. This wonderful event, captured in sharp full-color photographs, includes a mass procession, with the patron saint's statue carried over a carpet of colored sawdust; crackling fireworks; and whistling rockets exploding in the night sky in dazzling designs. An informative tribute to an enduring Mexican tradition, with exciting visuals and a basic glossary of Spanish terms.?Selene S. Vasquez, Orange Brook Elementary School, Hollywood, FL

From Booklist

Ages 5^-8. In Tultepec, a Mexican town noted for its fireworks, Caren helps as her extended family and neighbors prepare for a fiesta honoring San Juan de Dios, their patron saint. The festival includes a parade of giant puppets painted to look like bulls and other creatures, a procession of the saint's statue, an amusement park with rides and food, and towers of fireworks, which fill the night sky with their exploding rockets and spinning lights. The book's large format gives plenty of space for Ancona's clear, full-color photos. Readers who have little idea of life in Mexico will learn as much from the pictures as from the words, which clearly describe preparations for the festival. Spanish words used in the text are usually defined in parentheses at first use, italicized wherever they appear, and also defined in a glossary. This captures the excitement of a fiesta. 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfull book!, November 28, 1999

This review is from: Fiesta Fireworks (Library Binding)
This delightful book gives a wonderful glimpse into the Mexican culture of fireworks, as seen by a little girl whose family are deeply involved in that culture. As a fireworks professional, I appreciated this warm and sympathetic view of fireworks. When people ask why I am involved in fireworks, I get out this book and show them the picture on the cover. Fireworks is the only way I know to put that expression of joy and awe onto the faces of children. A truly wonderful book, which captures that wonder.
