Book Description

The Mayor of Pamplona, Hemingway jr., the only English bullfighter, the greatest American and Spanish bull-runners... there is simply no other guide to Pamplona in the English language...

The most dangerous event in the world takes place in the middle of its biggest party. Every morning at 8am, from July 7th to July 14th, a herd of fighting bulls are stampeded through the streets of Pamplona during its Feria of San Fermín, the Spanish Fiesta, which over a million people attend every year. This is the ultimate guide to surviving - and enjoying - Fiesta, both in the 'encierro' - the bull-run - and outside of it (and includes information on what to do for the other 358 days of the year in the city.)

With a foreword from the Mayor of Pamplona, making this the only government sanctioned guide to the city, and contributions by John Hemingway, grandson of Nobel-prize winning author Ernest Hemingway - who made Pamplona world famous - and a memoir by Beatrice Welles of her first visit there with her father, Orson Welles, producer, director, writer and star of the greatest film ever made 'Citizen Kane'. Also including chapters on how to run by 'Buffalo' Bill Hillmann - the best young American runner - and why to run by Joe Distler - the greatest American runner ever - and photos by EPA senior photographer, and half-century Pamplona veteran, Jim Hollander.

It is edited by award-winning English author and travel writer - and former bullfighter - Alexander Fiske-Harrison whose book 'Into The Arena: The World Of The Spanish Bullfight' was a finalist for the William Hill Sports Book Of The Year 2011, the world's oldest - and richest - sports' writing prize.

It also has advice pages from the very greatest Spanish and Basque runners: Julen Madina Ayerbe, Miguel Angel Eguiluz Lopez, Jokin Zuasti Urbano and Josechu Lopez Jimeno - with over 2,000 bull-runs between them... there is simply no other guide book like in existence, in English or Spanish.

(Includes links to the most important bull-running videos, hotel and travel information and booking sites, Spanish phrasebook and details of other, smaller bull-runs throughout Europe. Includes additional photos by award-winning Spanish photographer Nicolás Haro .)

4.0 out of 5 stars Running with the Bulls in Pamplona December 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As the Mayor of Pamplona had famously once noted in 1995, the week-long festival that includes the running of the bulls from the corral on Santo Domingo to the bullring through the curved, sometimes inclined, wet cobblestoned streets of Pamplona is not a jog with pets.

The mayor of the time made the statement after a 22-year-old American, Matthew Peter Tassio, was killed in a run with the bulls--his first, and last. Tassio was gored more than once, but the one that sealed his fate was where the horn had curved around his waist and dissected his aorta, which was discovered by an EMT trying to stabilize him.

I appreciated much of Alexander Fiske-Harrison's explanation and research into this facet of the what and why and how of bullfighting, which is the end game for the bulls of each day's run in Pamplona, and understanding that accompanies his and his friends' passion for El Encierro, the running of the bulls from the corral to the bullring in the morning.

Among the best advice in the book, and the reason I say it is more than a guidebook, are the individual stories of the contributors, and their friendship, and their studying and learning from Spaniards and especially Pamplona locals about the traditions of the run, including that the red scarf symbolizes the martyrdom of Saint Fermin, who was beheaded, whose blessing is sought by runners before the run each morning, and who is the co-patron saint of Pamplona itself.

The explanations by each as to why they run, why anyone runs, as well as how they run makes this book not only interesting, and educational, but also delightful and engaging.

July 9th, 2014, one of the contributing authors of "How to survive the bulls of Pamplona" or Bill Hillmann was ironically gored in the running of the bulls in Pamplona. One would hope that authors of a How to book would not be injured following whatever advice is in the book. Looking forward however to his new book coming out... "Guide to the best urgent care facilities in Pamplona".

4.0 out of 5 stars I Have A New Appreciation January 23, 2015

This really grabbed me. It unlocks some of the mystery of Spain. This book is really two. One about how to survive running with the bulls which has much useful info if you were planning on doing it. And two is about bull fighting which is chock full of artistry. The photos are worth the price of the whole thing. It's just a beautiful book about a very intriguing subject. Have fun!

If you want to go there, this is a must read. If you always wondered what it would be like to go there but may never make it, this is a must read. If you are not sure whether or not you want to go, this will make up your mind for you. In short, you should read it. Well written and a quick read. I only wish it had been out before my first time there.
