Editorial Reviews

Señor Coconut, aka Atom or Uwe Schmidt, is a German producerand DJ, based in Santiago, Chile. In 2000, he revolutionized Latin electronic music with 'El Baile Aleman', transposing Kraftwerk byte-for-byte into a soundfield of maracas, congas, shakers, and vibes-a-go-go. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Coconut's groundbreaking album, Nacional Records is re-issuing his album 'Fiesta Songs.' 'Fiesta Songs' features Latin electronic tributes to classic tracks like Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," Sade's "Smooth Operator," The Doors' "Riders on the Storm," and Michael Jackson' "Beat It."

I was in a clothing store a couple of years ago, and on the sound system was a wicked salsa version of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the water".

Having cut my teeth on Deep Purple, but long since expanded my musical tastes in almost endless directions, as soon as I got home, I googled around a little and found out the geniuses behind this gem were Senor Coconut.

I suppose, once one gets over the cognitive dissonance of a salsa version of "Smoke on the water" to begin with, one shouldn't be too surprised to learn that these guys are from Germany of all places.

There are more killer covers here than just "Smoke".

If you're into salsa, cha-cha-cha, bolero, etc., and also enjoy pop, rock, etc. (and who doesn't?), then this is right up your alley.

This album really makes me happy. The covers of "Riders on the Storm" and "Beat It" are hilarious and ingenious. They are really very good musicians as well, with tight rhythms and smooth instrumentation. It will keep you dancing!

Fun stuff here. "Electrolatino" is my favorite. The whole album is great fun, but skip the English version of "Smoke on the Water" and go for the bonus Espanol version instead. If you haven't experienced Senor Coconut yet, get with it! There are 3 albums; buy them all. I hope this isn't the last we hear from him...

I was turned on to the magic that is Senior Cocnut by a German friend who thinks the man is brilliant. The music is well made, but it's essentially latin-flavored elevator music versions of popular songs. This is fun for two or three listens, then it gets boring. I ended up giving my copy to my elderly mother, who likes EZ Listening. Essentially that's what this is. The kind of music you used to hear when on hold for a dentists' office or the customer service department of the mall.

I suppose it could be fun background music to have randomly pop up during a party, amidst other tracks. Or if you were making a movie, it might be fun to have this somewhere on the soundtrack, but basically it's modestly diverting uselessness.

an extravaganza of sound and festive energy that will pump new life into your stereo system pronto.
A highly amusing and entertaining arrangement of voice and spiced up instruments, not to mention the wonderful little surprises like Martin Gore influences.
Totally unique.
