Anyone who is a military buff and has not read this book, needs to get a copy right away. The descriptions of the ancient battles, particularly, will have you rereading several times. This book has been around a long time; it was written in a time when a lot of research went into the making of a book, so the descriptions of the battles give the reader enough information to get a good picture of what happened.

There are probably thousands of books recounting various wars and battles over the centuries. The author's first battle is the battle of Marathon and his last is Waterloo. What the author does in this book is to select certain battles as "decisive" because the outcome of each battle, while not necessarily winning the war, did vitally impact the outcome of the war as well as the future of the countries involved and, indeed, the world as a whole. By the author's describing the political and social situation leading up to the battles and the consequences of the battles it is easy to understand why each battle is considered decisive. In addition, his frequent quoting of contemporary historians most familiar with the battle at the time the battles actually took place give even more authority and interest to his descriptions of events.
