Book Description

Reviewers of this five-star comic novel have been ecstatic about its kinky humor, calling Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan "hysterically funny and outrageous," and "a very funny sci-fi, gothic horror."

Michael Silverstein's book is a wild riff about some very strange doings under the streets of Gotham in 1973. A criminal society has taken root there along with a pollution-spawned new chain of life, both of which must be destroyed by an elite, secretly created military unit headed by a guy planning a coup d’état.

All that stands in the way of New York City descending into utter chaos, the country getting a military dictator, and the destruction of our present natural order, is a bumbling alternative newspaper reporter with landlord problems, and a pistol-toting feminist with anger issues.

Joe Gandelman, Editor-In-Chief in Arts & Entertainment at The Moderate Voice wrote in his review of Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan:

"The only question in reading this book is exactly where has Silverstein been HIDING all these years as a fiction writer? He is a GREAT writer and enthralling storyteller whose writing packs a hay-maker punch with vividly constructed scenes and punchy, realistic dialogue — a writer who easily elicits a chuckle or two (or more)... I could easily see him selling a script to Hollywood."

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't go down there Morey March 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fifteen feet beneath manhattan is a very funny Sci-fi, Gothic horror, about a struggling Manhattan reporter, Morey Caine working on his first big scoop. Oh jeez! He soon wishes this was only just a scoop as he digs himself in way deeper then 15 feet. Page 1 grabs you by your "here Kitty Kitty" and makes you want to run. Oh it's scary, and very funny. Its a conspiracy with claws and ricochet bullets,,oh Ouch. The writing flows as the soup gets thicker, Morey struggles to unlock the mystery of whats been going on under the streets of Manhattan. I heard myself saying "hey Morey don't go down that manhole are you crazy",,,, too freaky. Oh jeez. Thumbs up for this uniquely funny novel by Michael Silverstein. I'm still laughing when I think about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun! April 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an avid fan of mysteries and as a story analyst, there is one thing I know for sure: a great series must have a terrific protagonist. Morey Caine is one! Though his hysterically funny and outrageous adventures will grab your attention and hold it, it is Morey who wins your heart. A survivor used to rolling with the punches, but never giving up, Morey's wry observations and bravery in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles makes you unable to resist rooting for him. He may not always make the best choices, but he's deceptively clever when he needs to be.

Set in New York City in the early 70s, Morey is a freelance reporter desperately in need of money. To pay his rent, he must complete an investigative piece on what is really going in the sewers. Are all the terrible rumors just urban myths? Doggedly determined despite the increasingly terrifying situations he finds himself in, Morey is unwillingly drawn into a struggle between two demented, power-hungry individuals from the far opposite poles of the political spectrum. It is a wild ride through to the end!

Michael Silverstein is a skilled writer, who obviously delights in wordplay and his metaphors never fail to entertain and amaze. I look forward to Morey Caine's next adventure.

I've always been a huge fan of Michael Silverstein. I first read his wonderful political poetry on his site Wall Street Poet. I invited the former NPR poet and environmental advisor to the Clinton-Gore campaign to do Guest Voices on my weblog and he eventually became a co-blogger, writing prose more often than poetry on Wall Street and economic issues. So when I learned he had a book available on Kindle I was curious and decided to invest the $2.99. (I am a HUGE fan of Kindles and LOVE my Kindle Touch).

Fifteen Feet Beneath Manhattan (The Bizarre Adventures of Morey Caine) is a comic, thriller gothic novel centering on the saga of how Caine, a struggling alternative newspaper reporter, gets drawn into sinister things going on and lurking beneath the streets of Manhattan. There are creepy humans under the streets -- and non-humans almost as creepy as the creepy humans. he gets sucked into events by an insidious sanitation bureaucrat. But the real villain is Victor ben Shargis who dreams of a future in which he takes over much more than the underground.

The only question in reading this book is: exactly where has Silverstein been HIDING all these years as a fiction writer?? He is a GREAT writer and enthralling storyteller whose writing packs a hay-maker punch with vividly constructed scenes and punchy, realistic dialogue -- a writer who easily elicits a chuckle or two (or more). The real shocker of this book is that you'd think Silverstein has been been writing this kind of lightening-paced thriller for years since it stacks up well against any thrillers on the market today or yesterday. Hopefully, Silverstein will do more lively fictions books such as this and try to get into print editions. I could easily see him selling a script to Hollywood.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York Noir! January 7, 2013
Format:Paperback
This mock noir/ gothic /science fiction comedy is falling down funny. I mean Funny! Pity poor Morey Caine, he's in over his head, out of his depth.and down on his luck. There are megalomaniacs, femme fatales, secret military bases and mutants. And then there are the Sewers of NYC. Hilarious!-Bob Walters

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not Ralph Kramden's sewer! November 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As you get into the book you began to wonder--what will you find in the sewers of New York: Vaults full of gems and gold-plated turds? Preparations for the East Coast Pipe Fitters Union's Annual Ball & Orgy? Classier sewage than that found in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and even Paris? A race of petulant chipmunks addicted to hastily flushed cocaine stashes that taint the waters of New York's drainage system?

I won't spoil it for you. Read the book and you'll find out soon enough. Once you do, you get to wondering some more. You ask yourself: "Where is this going? I'm reading lots of mysterious, zany stuff that doesn't make sense. Is it all going to come together, or is the author stringing me along with intrigue that never reaches a satisfying conclusion (like the final episode of the series 'Lost')?" If that happens, you promise yourself you will bombard this fellow with death threats, or at least send him an envelope stuffed full of confetti.

But Silverstein knows this about you. He doesn't like death threats, and he certainly doesn't like to sweep up confetti, so he does bring it all together. And he has you laughing along the way. And once you finish this book, you will never again look at someone carrying a jai alai racket in quite the same way.

This ain't your run-of-the-mill mystery/adventure/comedy novel. It has a different flavor, and you are in for a treat. Priced just right for the Kindle, at $2.99, you can't go wrong.
