"I'm off to the market tomorrow to buy a pound of Fusilli bucati lunghi and some fresh pepper to roast so that I can make Fusilli bucati lunghi con salsa di peperoni."

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and tasty December 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
There are hundreds of different pasta shapes, yet most of us are only familiar with a handful. There's spaghetti, linguini, elbow, macaroni, lasagna noodles... and some funny shaped ones. But in Italy, every pasta has a purpose. Different shapes work best with different sauces, and there are a great many more sauces than the variety found on your supermarket shelf, or at the local pseudo-Italian chain restaurant. Author Giada Berlusconi has put together a collection of 50 different pasta recipes, each featuring a sauce appropriate to a specific pasta shape. Along with the familiar linguine, angel hair and penne you'll find creste di gallo (cookscomb), fisarmoniche (little accordions), and casarecci (homemade) pasta.

The recipes here are simple, but that's not to say this is a cookbook for rank beginners. Berlusconi assumes a certain level of cooking experience in her readers. Her Canneroni recipe tells the reader to "Brown some garlic, onion, hot pepper and tomatoes finely chopped." How much? That's up to you. The Capelli d'Angelo begins by instructing the cook to "Season asparagus and oven roast in a 450 degree(s) oven for 2-3 minutes", which means she assumes you'll know how to roast them and how to tell when they're done. There aren't any photos of the finished dishes either. But the book with a bit of experience in the kitchen will have no trouble navigating their way through this book. You don't need a degree form CIA; just a reasonable familiarity in the kitchen.

One important note: The dishes in this cookbook may be simple, but that means they rely on the use of quality ingredients for their flavor. Don't think you can get away with buying cheap olive oil or that dried, powdered Kraft parmesan cheese. The better the ingredients you use, the better the dishes will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 shapes of Yummy Italian Recipes! January 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Kindles because you can have recipes at your fingertips when you are shopping. This is one cookbook that will stay in my kindle! Most recipes are simple and some ingredients you will already have on hand, if not all. You can use other types of pastas in the recipes you love if your local market doesn't have the more exotic pastas. Although you might want to visit an Italian market because some of these pastas are very eye catching and would impress any guest. It would be a great conversation piece if you serve up some Creste di Gallo with red peppers and sausage. A simple budget friendly recipe made to impress!
